Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO GAVE UP HIS THRONE

By autumn, the Rossi organization had changed beyond recognition.

I had relinquished control of its criminal operations and cooperated with authorities investigating past offenses.

The legitimate businesses underwent independent review.

Some were sold.

Others were restructured.

Several executives resigned.

My lawyers warned that the consequences of my own actions would not disappear because I had decided to change.

I accepted that.

For years, I'd believed power meant avoiding consequences.

Now I understood that responsibility meant facing them.

Hannah watched from a distance.

She never asked me to become perfect.

She asked me to be honest.

That was harder.

One evening, I told her:

“I don't know what my future looks like.”

She looked at me.

“Neither do I.”

I smiled.

“Doesn't that frighten you?”

“Of course.”

She took my hand.

“But I'd rather face an uncertain future with the truth than a comfortable one built on lies.”

I looked toward Leo, sleeping in his crib.

He was healthy enough now to spend most days behaving like an ordinary baby.

He laughed.

He grabbed my hair.

He threw food.

He woke me at impossible hours.

I loved every exhausting second.

Hannah watched him.

“He's getting so big.”

I smiled.

“He's going to be taller than me.”

“Let's not make promises we can't keep.”

I laughed.

Then grew serious.

“Hannah.”

She looked up.

“I love you.”

Her expression softened.

“I know.”

I smiled.

“That's not the response I was hoping for.”

She laughed.

Then took my face in her hands.

“I love you too.”

May you like

And for the first time since Sophia died, the words didn't feel like betrayal.

They felt like permission to keep living.
