Chapter 8 - The Night Dante Lost His Own Men

The crisis began on a Thursday evening.

Victor Romano announced that several senior associates no longer recognized Dante's leadership.

He claimed Dante had endangered family business through cooperation with outside investigators.

He accused him of allowing a housekeeper and her daughter to influence decisions.

And he announced that he would assume temporary control of the organization.

The declaration reached Dante through his attorney.

He read it without speaking.

For ten years, Victor had called him son.

Now the man was trying to take everything.

---

Marco Bellini stood beside the library door.

“Boss, several of our people have gone over to Victor.”

Dante looked up.

“How many?”

“Enough that we should assume parts of the old security network are compromised.”

Dante nodded.

Then asked a question Marco hadn't expected.

“Who remains responsible for the legitimate employees?”

Marco frowned.

“What?”

“The drivers. Warehouse staff. Office workers. People who need their wages.”

Marco hesitated.

“Independent managers are handling most operations.”

“Good. Make sure the legal teams have what they need.”

Marco stared.

“Victor is trying to destroy you.”

Dante looked at him.

“I know.”

“And you're worried about payroll?”

Dante's expression hardened.

“Ordinary families shouldn't suffer because powerful men are fighting over control.”

Marco fell silent.

It was not the answer he would have received from Dante five years earlier.

---

Elena received a warning through Patricia that evening.

A vehicle associated with Victor's network had been seen near her apartment building.

There was no confirmed attempt to approach Lily.

But the situation was concerning enough to review safety arrangements.

Elena decided to stay with one of her sisters in a different neighborhood while authorities examined the reports.

She packed Lily's clothes.

Medication.

School supplies.

And the white shoebox of drawings.

Lily watched.

“Mama, are we going on vacation?”

Elena forced a smile.

“Something like that.”

“Can I bring Mr. Bunny?”

“Of course.”

---

As they prepared to leave, Elena's phone rang.

Dante.

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Señor Moretti.”

“Mrs. Castellanos, I heard you have a safe place to stay.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

A pause followed.

Then he said, “I'm sorry my family's problems have reached your home.”

Elena looked toward Lily.

“You didn't put the bug in your tie.”

“No.”

“But your organization gave Victor power.”

Dante was silent.

She continued.

“And people like Jorge paid for it.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

For the first time, Elena heard no attempt to justify the past.

Only acknowledgment.

---

That night, several armed associates connected to Victor attempted to enter a Moretti-controlled warehouse that had been placed under independent management.

The incident prompted a law-enforcement response.

No civilian workers were harmed.

But the confrontation made clear that Victor was willing to use force to preserve control.

Dante's attorneys contacted authorities with relevant information.

The struggle was no longer merely an internal family disagreement.

It involved possible threats, financial crimes, and attempts to interfere with witnesses.

---

Meanwhile, Isabel Romano received a message from her brother.

Come home. We need to talk.

She stared.

For years, Victor had used family loyalty to silence her questions.

Now she had provided information about her husband's death.

She knew he would never forgive that easily.

She forwarded the message to her attorney.

Then called Dante.

“Victor wants to see me.”

Dante looked toward the window.

“Don't go alone.”

“I won't.”

She hesitated.

“Dante?”

“Yes?”

“I loved my brother once.”

He was silent.

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I keep wondering when he became this man.”

Dante looked down.

“Perhaps he always had the capacity. Perhaps we simply ignored it.”

---

The next morning, Victor's financial network began unraveling.

Independent investigators identified transactions linking his private companies to the surveillance arrangements and several disputed port contracts.

Records concerning Pier Seven were preserved.

Additional witnesses came forward.

And for the first time, Victor couldn't make the questions disappear simply by frightening the people asking them.

---

Dante returned to the library that afternoon.

Lily's drawing still lay on the desk.

The little boy beneath the pear tree.

The man beside him.

Green leaves colored imperfectly.

Dante picked it up.

For years, he had believed family meant defending the organization his father left behind.

Now he was beginning to understand that family might mean refusing to pass its worst habits to another generation.

And the first person to teach him that lesson had been a four-year-old girl carrying dolphin-shaped scissors.
