Chapter 10 - When the Five Families Turned Against Him

The postponed meeting never took place.

Instead, representatives of the five families issued competing statements about Dante's leadership and Victor's authority.

Some supported Victor.

Others remained neutral.

A few quietly contacted independent counsel because they feared the expanding investigations would expose their own activities.

The alliance Dante spent eleven months arranging collapsed before it began.

---

Victor believed that meant victory.

He held private meetings.

Promised stability.

Offered control of profitable operations.

And portrayed Dante as a man whose judgment had been compromised by sentimentality.

But Victor had miscalculated.

The concealed devices in the ties had been preserved.

Giuseppe Falcone had provided his account.

Financial records linked Victor's associates to questionable payments.

And several people were cooperating with investigators.

The more Victor attempted to consolidate power, the more attention he attracted.

---

Dante met with his legal advisers in a modest conference room.

He had stopped using the mansion for sensitive business meetings.

His attorney placed a folder on the table.

“The legitimate shipping division can continue under independent management. But your involvement with the criminal organization creates serious exposure.”

Dante nodded.

“I understand.”

“Leaving doesn't erase your past.”

“I know.”

The attorney studied him.

“Then why do you want to proceed?”

Dante looked toward the window.

“Because I've spent ten years believing my father's legacy required me to continue everything he built.”

He paused.

“Now I know he wanted something different.”

---

The separation was difficult.

Some operations closed.

Others became subject to investigation.

Employees needed new arrangements.

Business partners questioned whether contracts would survive.

Dante worked with independent managers and counsel to address lawful obligations.

He did not pretend the transition would be painless.

But he no longer wanted an empire built on fear.

---

Victor responded by threatening to expose details of Dante's criminal past.

Dante did not deny that those details mattered.

He instructed counsel to preserve relevant records and address any investigations through legal processes.

The decision stunned Victor.

For years, he relied on the threat of exposure to control people.

Now Dante was refusing to remain silent simply to protect his reputation.

---

One afternoon, Victor called.

“You're destroying your father's name.”

Dante stood beside the library window.

“No.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“Then what do you call dismantling everything he left you?”

Dante looked toward the pear tree.

“I'm trying to stop the parts that harmed people.”

Victor's voice hardened.

“You sound like that housekeeper.”

Dante went still.

“Don't speak about Elena.”

“Or what?”

A long silence followed.

Then Dante answered.

“Or I end this call and let the evidence speak for itself.”

Victor laughed.

“You've become weak.”

Dante looked down.

“Perhaps I was weaker when I needed everyone to fear me.”

He ended the call.

---

Elena learned about the collapse of the alliance through a news report.

She sat at her sister's kitchen table while Lily colored beside her.

The television described business restructuring, legal investigations, and a power struggle within the Moretti organization.

Elena turned it off.

She didn't care who controlled the family empire.

She cared whether the people responsible for Jorge's death would be held accountable.

She cared whether Lily could return to preschool safely.

And whether she would ever be able to sleep without checking the locks.

---

That evening, Dante received a letter from Lily.

It arrived through Patricia.

Inside was the drawing of Jorge holding a wrench.

On the back, Elena had written:

Lily wanted you to remember him.

Dante sat for a long time staring at the picture.

He had met countless powerful men.

Governors.

Executives.

Criminal leaders.

People who demanded respect and feared humiliation.

Yet a dead dockworker's daughter had asked him for something none of those men ever had.

Not money.

Not obedience.

Remembrance.

Dante placed the drawing beside his father's letter.

And made a decision.

He would not use Jorge's death as a story about his own redemption.

May you like

He would help ensure the truth was established.

Then he would accept whatever consequences followed.
