Chapter 7 - The Black Car at Twilight

The streetlights flickered to life, casting long, golden pools of light across the damp asphalt as darkness settled over the city.

Thomas stood with his head bowed against the wooden handle of his cart, his heart breaking in silence.

Then, a low, smooth engine purred near the curb.

A long, pristine black luxury Maybach sedan glided to a halt right beside Thomas's cart, its polished black paint reflecting the neon city lights like black glass.

Pedestrians on the sidewalk immediately stopped in their tracks. Businessmen paused mid-stride, turning to stare at the half-million-dollar vehicle occupying the corner.

The front door opened, and a chauffeur dressed in a sharp black suit and white gloves stepped out onto the pavement. He walked swiftly to the rear passenger door, pulled the handle, and held it open with formal precision.

From the back seat emerged a woman.

She was in her late twenties, tall, breathtakingly elegant, wearing a tailored winter coat of midnight-blue cashmere that moved gracefully with the evening breeze. Her dark brown hair was styled with effortless poise, and her presence commanded the entire street.

Yet as she stepped onto the concrete sidewalk, her composure fractured.

Her amber-brown eyes locked onto the faded, chipped paint of the old ice cream cart. Tears welled in her eyes, shimmering beneath the glow of the streetlights before she even took her first step forward.

Thomas looked up politely, assuming she was a wealthy tourist or an executive from the glass towers who had lost her way.

"Good evening, ma'am," Thomas said, his voice raspy and exhausted, instinctively putting on his polite vendor persona. "I'm sorry, but the machine is shut down for the night."

The woman didn't ask for ice cream.

She walked slowly toward him, her leather heels clicking softly against the pavement, stopping just inches from the wooden counter.

Without uttering a single word, she opened her designer leather handbag.

With trembling, manicured fingers, she withdrew a small, aged object and laid it gently onto the stainless-steel counter.
