Chapter 3 - The Promise on the Napkin

The little girl froze completely.
She stared down at the towering confection as if she were holding a piece of the sun. The cold, sweet scent enveloped her senses. A single, heavy tear slipped from her eyelashes, tracing down her cheek and landing with a soft splash against the melting cream.
She looked at Thomas with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"Mister..." she whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "I don't have enough money. You forgot my coins."
Thomas gently pushed her tiny hand closed over the two nickels, enclosing both her hands in his warm, rough palms.
"Keep your coins, little one," Thomas said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "You buy something warm for your mother on your way home. This ice cream is a gift from me."
"Why?" she asked, her voice cracking. "Nobody ever gives us anything."
"Because you matter," Thomas answered, looking straight into her soul. "Because nobody in this world should ever have to cry from hunger while people walk past. Now eat before it melts in the wind."
The girl took a tiny, hesitant taste from the edge of the cone. The sweet, rich flavor exploded across her tongue, bringing warmth and life back into her shivering body. A radiant, breathtaking smile broke across her tear-streaked face.
She took three paper napkins from the dispenser on the counter.
She set the ice cream carefully on the ledge of the cart, took a stub of a blue crayon from her pocket, and flattened one of the napkins against the wooden board.
With slow, deliberate, uneven strokes, she wrote nine words in jagged, childish handwriting:
ONE DAY I’LL PAY YOU BACK.
- CLARA
She folded the napkin into a neat little square and placed it into Thomas’s hand.
"One day, I will pay you back, mister," she said with a fierce, unwavering seriousness that startled him. "I promise on my heart."
Thomas smiled, touched by her innocence, and tucked the paper into his front shirt pocket right beside his heart. "You owe me nothing, Clara. Just grow up strong and be kind to others."
May you like
Clara picked up her towering cone with both hands. She turned around and walked slowly down the crowded street, holding the ice cream high against her chest like it was the most sacred, precious treasure on earth.
Thomas stood on the sidewalk and watched her until her faded red dress vanished into the autumn dusk.
