Chapter 9 - The Kingpin’s Retribution

By 4:00 AM, the blizzard had settled into a silent, thick blanket over the industrial docks of Jones Island.

Inside an abandoned marine repair hangar owned by Rourke Freight Logistics, the air was freezing, smelling of diesel, rust, and salt spray. A single high-bay sodium lamp hung from the iron rafters, casting an eerie amber glow over the concrete floor.

Julian Vance sat bound to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the hangar.

His tailored suit was soaked in melting snow, his hair plastered to his forehead, his lip split and bleeding where an enforcer had clipped him during his extraction from his luxury condo in the Third Ward.

Standing ten feet away was Julian’s father, Arthur Vance—the sixty-year-old CEO of Vance Capital. Arthur had been escorted to the hangar thirty minutes earlier by two of Gideon’s corporate security officers. The older man was trembling, holding his heart, looking at his bruised son in absolute, horrified disbelief.

"Gideon... please," Arthur Vance begged, his voice cracking into a dry, pathetic rasp. "This is kidnapping! This is a federal felony! We are business associates!"

Gideon Rourke stood in the shadows near the hangar doors, a glass of neat bourbon resting in his hand. He took a slow sip, the amber liquid catching the light.

"You are not my business associate, Arthur," Gideon spoke, his gravelly voice cutting through the freezing hangar like a razor blade. "Your mezzanine line of credit was terminated last month. You are an insolvent debtor."

Gideon stepped into the amber light. He looked massive, immovable, and lethal.

"Your son," Gideon continued, pointing his glass toward the weeping Julian, "hired three men to firebomb and vandalize a commercial property in Walker’s Point tonight. A property deeded to Rowan Holdings."

Arthur Vance snapped his head toward his son, his face turning an ungodly shade of purple. "Julian?! Did you touch Rourke’s real estate?!"

"Dad... I was trying to get back at him!" Julian wailed, thrashing against the ropes. "He humiliated me at Aureline! He ruined our bank loans! I just wanted to smash the fat girl's shop!"

Arthur lunged forward, slapping his son across the face with a loud, violent CRACK.

"You suicidal idiot!" Arthur screamed, tears of sheer panic spilling down his wrinkled cheeks. "You destroyed our family for a petty grudge?!"

Gideon walked slowly toward them, his leather boots echoing against the concrete. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a manila legal folder, dropping it onto Julian’s lap.

"Let’s review the settlement terms, Arthur," Gideon said calmly.

He listed the conditions with surgical, ruthless precision:

Immediate Restitution: Vance Capital would wire five hundred thousand dollars into the commercial escrow account of Wren Artisan Pastries LLC by 9:00 AM as a pre-funded security and insurance bond.

Asset Forfeiture: Julian Vance would sign an unconditional transfer surrendering his entire 12% equity stake in the Third Ward commercial development corridor to Rowan Holdings for a nominal sum of ten dollars.

Banishment: Julian Vance would board an international flight to his family’s agricultural operations in rural Argentina before sunset, barred from returning to the state of Wisconsin under penalty of immediate criminal prosecution for attempted arson and felony conspiracy.

"If that wire transfer is delayed by sixty seconds," Gideon whispered, leaning down until his scarred jaw was inches from Arthur Vance’s ear, "the surveillance footage of your son directing the arson team goes directly to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. And your firm will cease to exist before the market opens."

Arthur Vance grabbed a gold fountain pen from his breast pocket with shaking hands, signing his signature on every single dotted line without reading a single paragraph.

"Take your son," Gideon commanded without looking back. "And if his name is ever spoken within five miles of Tessa Wren again, I will bury both of you beneath the coal terminal."
