Chapter 15 - A Sunrise Over Lake Michigan

One year later, the warm summer breeze swept across the private bluff of Rourke Estate in Whitefish Bay, overlooking the endless turquoise waters of Lake Michigan.

The sprawling lawn was a fairyland of white silk pavilions, blooming lavender hedges, and gentle harp music. Over two hundred guests—honest civic leaders, bakery staff, loyal dockworkers, and true friends—gathered beneath the golden afternoon sky.

Standing on the cedar terrace dressed in a breathtaking, custom-made ivory lace gown was Tessa Wren-Rourke.

The dress celebrated every curve of her body, flowing over her hips with exquisite elegance, its long train catching the summer wind like seafoam. Around her neck gleamed the antique emerald pendant, resting against skin that was radiant with peace, health, and boundless joy.

Under her sole leadership, Wren Artisan Pastries had expanded into a beloved community institution, winning three national culinary medals and establishing the Wren Foundation for Culinary Apprenticeships—funding full vocational scholarships for underprivileged women across the Midwest.

Footsteps sounded softly on the wooden deck behind her.

Gideon walked out onto the terrace, wearing a relaxed white linen shirt and slate trousers, holding two crystal glasses of iced sparkling lemonade.

He looked younger. The dark, cynical tension that had carved lines around his eyes for two decades was completely gone, healed by twelve months of unconditional love, laughter, and the warmth of a home filled with the scent of fresh bread.

"The guests are asking for the pastry chef," Gideon murmured, wrapping his strong, scarred arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his solid chest.

Tessa leaned her head back against his shoulder, closing her eyes as the breeze rustled through the oak trees overhead.

"Let them wait five minutes," she smiled, resting her hands over his on her abdomen. "The chef is busy with her husband."

Gideon buried his face into the soft curve of her neck, pressing a warm, lingering kiss against the sensitive skin beneath her ear.

"Do you remember Table Nine at Aureline, Tessa?" he asked softly.

"I remember thinking you were the most terrifying human being on the planet," she laughed quietly.

"And now?"

Tessa turned in his arms, looping her hands around his neck, looking deep into those slate-gray eyes that had once frozen the city with fear, now softened with absolute, eternal devotion.

"And now," Tessa whispered, rising onto her tiptoes, "you're just the man who loves my butter."

Gideon smiled—that rare, breathtaking, genuine smile that belonged only to her—and pulled his wife into a deep, sweeping kiss under the golden Wisconsin sun.

The cold laughter, the cruel judgment, and the shadows of the past were gone forever. Standing together on the bluffs of Lake Michigan, surrounded by honor, prosperity, and unbreakable love, their lives were finally, beautifully whole.
