Chapter 11 - THE PRICE OF HIS FATHER'S POWER

Dominic Vale met with his attorneys that evening.

The news was grim.

The investigation had expanded beyond Frank.

Financial records suggested that Vale-controlled companies had been involved in money laundering, fraudulent transfers, and corrupt arrangements over many years.

Dominic could no longer plausibly claim ignorance of the overall criminal operation.

His lawyers advised him that cooperation would likely expose him to serious consequences.

He listened without interrupting.

Then asked:

“What happens to Caleb?”

One attorney looked surprised.

“Your son?”

“Can he be held responsible for the company records?”

“That depends on his actual conduct and what the evidence shows. We won't speculate.”

Dominic nodded.

“What about the foundation?”

“It will require independent review and possibly restructuring.”

He looked down.

For decades, he had treated the empire as his life's work.

Now he realized how much damage had been hidden inside it.

His wife had died trying to expose some of that damage.

His son had spent years fighting to be believed.

And he had called himself a powerful father while failing to protect either one.

He asked Caleb to meet him at Adrian's office.

Caleb agreed after consulting his attorney.

Rebecca attended as interpreter.

Dominic sat waiting when his son entered.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Dominic slowly raised his hands.

His signs were awkward.

Uncertain.

But understandable.

Hello, Caleb.

Caleb stared.

Dominic swallowed.

I am sorry.

He struggled with the next sentence.

Rebecca gently helped clarify the intended meaning.

I should have learned your language.

Caleb watched him.

Then signed:

Why did you laugh at me in the restaurant?

Dominic looked devastated.

He answered aloud for Rebecca to interpret.

“Because I'm a coward.”

Caleb's expression tightened.

Dominic continued.

“I mocked you because I didn't understand you, and I couldn't bear admitting that I'd failed you.”

Caleb looked away.

“I treated your silence like proof that you were less capable. It was easier than facing what happened to our family.”

Dominic's voice broke.

“I was wrong.”

Caleb sat quietly.

Then asked:

Did you order the explosion?

Dominic went pale.

“No.”

His eyes filled.

“I swear I did not order your mother's death.”

Caleb studied him.

But you knew your businesses were doing things she hated.

Dominic lowered his head.

“Yes.”

And you kept choosing power.

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Then Caleb signed:

I want the truth. Not your empire.

Dominic nodded.

“You deserve it.”

He pushed a folder across the table.

Inside were documents authorizing his cooperation with investigators and the independent review of his businesses.

Caleb examined them.

Then looked up.

This doesn't make us a family again.

Dominic's eyes filled.

“I know.”

You can't purchase my forgiveness.

“I know.”

Caleb stood.

For a moment, Dominic looked as though he wanted to embrace him.

Instead, he remained seated.

And let his son decide when to leave.

Outside, Caleb found me waiting.

How was it? I asked.

He thought for a long time.

Then signed:

He finally looked at me when I spoke.

I squeezed his hand.

How did that feel?

Caleb's eyes filled.

Like being seen by someone who should have known me all my life.

He leaned against me.

May you like

I held him.

And for the first time, Caleb allowed himself to grieve not only his mother's death, but the childhood he had lost while everyone underestimated him.
