Chapter 1 - THE WAITRESS WHO UNDERSTOOD HIS SILENCE

At 8:17 P.M., Chicago's most feared mafia boss ordered me to speak to his deaf twenty-seven-year-old son, then burst out laughing. “Go ahead, sweetheart. Ask him if he wants steak, chicken, or crayons.” The entire restaurant went silent as Dominic Vale humiliated his own son in front of everyone. But when I raised my hands and began using sign language, the young man's eyes widened. He answered immediately—and what he signed next made me realize he'd been hiding something from his father for years.

My name is Hannah Mercer. I'm twenty-eight, and I work as a waitress at Bellamy's Steakhouse in downtown Chicago.

I've served rude businessmen, demanding celebrities, and customers who thought a generous tip gave them permission to humiliate people.

But nothing prepared me for Dominic Vale.

At sixty, Dominic controlled one of Chicago's most powerful mafia organizations. He owned trucking companies, construction firms, private security businesses, and enough political connections to make prosecutors nervous.

People stopped talking when he entered a room.

That freezing Tuesday evening, he arrived with three bodyguards and his son, Caleb.

Caleb was twenty-seven, tall, dark-haired, and strikingly handsome.

He was also deaf.

I'd heard the rumors.

At thirteen, Caleb had survived an explosion at the family lake house that killed his mother. Since then, people called him the broken heir, claiming he couldn't communicate or handle the family business.

I approached their table.

“Good evening. Can I start you with something to drink?”

“Bourbon,” Dominic ordered. “No ice.”

I turned to Caleb.

“And for you, sir?”

Dominic laughed.

“He can't hear you, sweetheart.”

I nodded politely.

“Of course. Does he know what he'd like?”

Dominic leaned back, grinning.

“Oh, this should be entertaining.”

He pointed toward his son.

“Go ahead. Talk to him.”

I hesitated.

“Excuse me?”

“Talk to my deaf son. Ask him if he wants a steak. Ask him if he wants crayons.”

One bodyguard chuckled.

Several customers stared at their plates.

Caleb remained motionless, looking toward the snowy window.

Then Dominic added something that made my stomach twist.

“He hasn't spoken to me in years. Maybe you'll perform a miracle.”

I slowly set down my order pad.

My younger brother, Evan, had been deaf since birth.

I'd spent years watching strangers treat him as though he couldn't think simply because he couldn't hear.

Evan hated being pitied.

He hated being mocked even more.

Six years earlier, he'd died unexpectedly from a heart condition.

But I never stopped signing.

Sometimes, when I missed him, I even signed to myself.

I turned toward Caleb.

Then I raised my hands.

Do you actually want dinner, or are you only here because your father needs an audience?

Caleb's head snapped toward me.

His eyes widened.

For the first time all evening, his expression came alive.

Then his hands moved.

Fast.

Confident.

Fluent.

Ribeye. Medium rare. Potatoes. Coffee. And if you can arrange it, a quieter father.

I bit my lip to keep from laughing.

Caleb smiled.

A real smile.

Something warm and unexpected passed between us.

For a moment, I forgot his father's bodyguards were watching.

Then Dominic leaned forward.

His amusement had vanished.

“What did he say?”

I looked at Caleb.

He was still watching me, but the smile was gone.

And suddenly I understood that translating his words wasn't as simple as taking a dinner order.

Because whatever Caleb had spent years keeping from his father, he'd just trusted a complete stranger enough to let her see a glimpse of it.

Dominic's voice hardened.

“Waitress. I asked you a question.”
