Chapter 1 - THE BREAD BENEATH HER HEEL

The boy reached for the bread with both dirty hands.

Before his fingers touched it, the rich woman stepped on it.

The small piece of bread crushed under her white heel outside the luxury bakery.

The boy froze.

People passing by slowed down, but nobody helped.

The woman looked down at him with disgust, her gold jewelry shining in the cold light.

“People like you don’t belong here.”

The boy stared at the bread under her shoe.

His oversized sweater hung off one shoulder. His pants were ripped at the knees. His shoes looked too broken to keep out the cold.

His eyes filled with tears, but he didn’t cry loudly.

He only whispered, “I was saving it for my little sister.”

The woman rolled her eyes and turned away like his hunger was an inconvenience.

But as the boy lowered his head, a small silver necklace slipped out from under his torn shirt.

The woman stopped.

Her breath caught.

She turned back slowly.

The boy clutched the necklace, frightened by the sudden change in her face.

“Where did you get that necklace?” she whispered.

The boy held it tighter.

“My mom said it was the only proof I had a family.”

The woman’s face collapsed.

Her hand reached toward him, trembling.

“I gave this to my baby before he disappeared.”
