Chapter 4 - THE MAN ROMAN CALLED FAMILY

Roman wanted Adrian brought to the estate immediately.
Maya stopped him.
“If Leo is right, Adrian has had three years to prepare for you.”
“He'll talk.”
“Because you're frightening?”
“Yes.”
“At least you're self-aware.”
Roman almost smiled.
Instead, they watched Adrian.
For forty-eight hours.
He behaved normally.
Office.
Court.
Dinner.
Home.
Then, at 2:13 a.m., Adrian drove to a cemetery.
He left flowers on Isabella Laurent's grave.
Maya watched from Roman's car.
“Why?”
Roman didn't answer.
Adrian then placed an envelope beneath the flowers.
After he left, Maya retrieved it.
Inside:
MAYA,
IF ROMAN IS WITH YOU, ELENA WAS RIGHT ABOUT HIM.
IF HE ISN'T, RUN.
Below was an address.
Roman stared.
“It's a trap.”
“Probably.”
“You're not going.”
Maya laughed.
“You're adorable when you think that's your decision.”
They went.
The address led to a tiny chapel outside the city.
Adrian waited alone.
Roman put a gun on the table.
Adrian looked at it.
“Still dramatic.”
“Where is my wife?”
“Alive.”
Roman's entire body went still.
Maya had never seen hope hurt someone before.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Roman grabbed Adrian.
“You have three seconds.”
Adrian didn't resist.
“I saved her.”
Roman froze.
Adrian had carried Elena from the burning estate.
Not to kidnap her.
To get her away.
Elena believed the real traitor was watching Roman.
She refused to tell Roman where she was going because she knew he'd tear the world apart searching.
“Who was she afraid of?”
Adrian looked at Maya.
“Isabella knew.”
“She's dead.”
“No.”
Maya stopped breathing.
Adrian shook his head.
“The woman you buried wasn't Isabella Laurent.”
Maya stared.
“I saw her body.”
“You saw a closed coffin.”
The world tilted.
“Where is my grandmother?”
Adrian answered.
May you like
“With Elena.”
