Chapter 3 - THE GIRL WITH THE SWALLOW

Maya had always hated hospitals.
Now she knew why.
Roman found the records.
Florence.
Fourteen years earlier.
Six-year-old Maya Laurent admitted with smoke inhalation, concussion and burns along her left shoulder.
No stair accident.
A fire.
Same week Roman and Elena were in Florence with two-year-old Leo.
Maya stared at the report.
“What happened?”
Roman looked toward Dante.
“Find the hotel.”
It no longer existed.
But newspaper archives did.
HOTEL FIRE IN FLORENCE INJURES NINE.
One photograph showed Roman carrying toddler Leo outside.
Behind him was Elena.
And beside Elena—
Isabella.
Maya's grandmother.
Maya sat down.
“She knew you.”
Roman nodded.
“Apparently.”
Another photograph showed a little girl wrapped in a blanket.
Maya.
The truth came from a retired firefighter.
He remembered her.
A little girl had found toddler Leo unconscious in a smoke-filled hallway.
She couldn't lift him.
So she pulled the fire alarm and screamed until an adult came.
Maya had saved Leo.
She remembered none of it.
Trauma had erased most of the night.
Elena hadn't forgotten.
Neither had Isabella.
The swallow tattoo came later.
Maya got it at eighteen because her grandmother used to call her “little bird.”
Except Isabella hadn't invented the symbol.
It belonged to a private network of women who moved endangered witnesses across borders.
Isabella had been one of them.
So had Elena.
Roman looked furious.
“My wife ran an underground escape network?”
“Your wife helped women disappear from dangerous men,” Maya corrected.
Roman looked at her.
“Are you implying something?”
“Should I be?”
Dante wisely left the room.
They found another message.
Elena had been planning to expose someone.
Not one of Roman's enemies.
Someone within his organization.
Someone using Roman's shipping empire to identify women who had entered Isabella's protection network.
Every woman Elena helped was being found again.
Some returned to abusive husbands.
Some vanished.
Elena discovered the leak.
Then the Lake Como estate burned.
Roman whispered:
“She wasn't targeted because she was my wife.”
Maya understood.
“She was targeted because she knew who the traitor was.”
Leo entered.
He placed a photograph on the table.
Roman's wedding photograph.
He pointed to one man.
Roman's face changed.
Adrian Cross.
His attorney.
His godfather.
The man who had raised Roman after his own father died.
Leo touched the photograph.
Then whispered:
May you like
“He carried Mama into the car.”
