Chapter 5 - THE WAITRESS WHO REFUSED HIS MONEY

Mia was fired the following morning.

The call came at eight seventeen.

The assistant manager, Peter Lang, sounded uncomfortable.

“I'm sorry, Mia.”

She sat on the edge of her bed.

“For what?”

“Management says you violated company policy.”

She laughed bitterly.

“By stopping someone from eating contaminated food?”

“That's not how they're describing it.”

“How are they describing it?”

Peter hesitated.

“Unauthorized removal of guest property.”

Mia closed her eyes.

Of course.

The plate.

The envelope.

The corridor.

Everything she had done to protect someone was now being used against her.

An hour later, Ethan called.

“Mia.”

She stared at the screen.

“Mr. Brooks.”

“Ethan.”

She didn't answer.

He continued.

“I heard what happened.”

“Then you know I don't have a job.”

“I can fix that.”

Mia laughed.

“Of course you can.”

Ethan paused.

“What does that mean?”

“It means people like you always think money fixes everything.”

He was silent.

She continued.

“My father lost his reputation. My mother died believing he was innocent. I've spent eleven years being treated like the daughter of a thief.”

Her voice trembled.

“And now you're offering me a job?”

Ethan swallowed.

“I was trying to help.”

“Then help me find the truth.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

Ethan offered to cover her immediate expenses.

Mia refused.

But when he suggested arranging independent legal support and preserving her employment records, she agreed.

She understood the difference between accepting charity and protecting her rights.

That afternoon, Ethan received a message from Daniel Reed.

We need to talk. Privately.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then replied:

About David Carter?

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

May you like

Then Daniel sent one sentence.

Your father warned me this day would come.
