Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LISTEN

Ethan and Mia grew closer over the following year.

Their relationship began with difficult conversations.

About David.

About Charles.

About money.

About responsibility.

Mia didn't allow Ethan to hide behind apologies.

When he made promises, she expected action.

When he spoke about reform, she asked for evidence.

And when he tried to solve every problem with a check, she reminded him that dignity mattered too.

Ethan found himself looking forward to those conversations.

He had spent years surrounded by people who agreed with him.

Mia rarely did.

And somehow, that made him feel more understood than ever.

One evening, they walked along Lake Michigan.

The wind was cold.

The city lights shimmered across the water.

Ethan looked at her.

“Can I ask you something?”

Mia smiled.

“You usually do.”

He laughed.

“Why did you warn me that night?”

She considered the question.

“Because I knew something was wrong.”

“You didn't know me.”

“No.”

“You could have lost your job.”

“I did.”

Ethan smiled sadly.

“I know.”

Mia looked toward the water.

“My dad used to say that doing the right thing doesn't guarantee a reward.”

Ethan nodded.

“What does it guarantee?”

She smiled faintly.

“That you can live with yourself afterward.”

Ethan stopped walking.

He looked at her.

Then whispered:

“I think I'm falling in love with you.”

Mia's breath caught.

She looked at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she smiled.

“That's complicated.”

Ethan laughed.

“Very.”

She stepped closer.

May you like

“But not impossible.”

And she kissed him.
