Chapter 14 - THE SECOND CHANCE NOBODY EXPECTED

Ethan and I didn't fall back in love overnight.

That would have been too easy.

Too dishonest.

We had changed.

I wasn't the young woman who'd married him at twenty-three.

He wasn't the ambitious man who believed success could solve every problem.

We had scars.

Different lives.

Ten years of memories that didn't include each other.

But we also had Noah and Sophie.

And slowly, we began building something new.

We attended school events together.

Shared meals.

Took the twins to museums.

Argued about bedtime.

Laughed at Noah's business plans.

Admired Sophie's paintings.

Sometimes Ethan stayed for coffee after the children went to bed.

We talked.

Not about the past.

About the present.

Then one evening, he asked:

“Claire, would you have dinner with me?”

I smiled.

“We've had dinner together dozens of times.”

He shook his head.

“I mean a date.”

I stared.

He looked nervous.

“Only if you want to.”

I thought about the man I'd hated for ten years.

The man who'd spent the last year showing up.

Keeping promises.

Respecting boundaries.

Learning how to be a father.

Then I smiled.

“Yes.”

Our first date was at a small Italian restaurant.

No cameras.

No business associates.

No expensive spectacle.

Just two people who had once loved each other and were trying to discover whether they still could.

At the end of the evening, Ethan walked me to my car.

“Claire.”

I turned.

“May I kiss you?”

My heart beat faster.

I looked at him.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

The kiss was gentle.

Familiar.

And completely new.

When we separated, Ethan smiled.

“I missed you.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

Then I whispered:

May you like

“I missed you too.”
