Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED HIS MILLIONS

Ethan offered to establish trusts for Noah and Sophie.

I agreed that financial planning could be appropriate.

But I insisted on independent legal advice and protections that kept the children's interests separate from his business.

He accepted.

Then he offered to buy me a house.

I refused.

“Claire, you deserve—”

“I deserve to make my own decisions.”

He stopped.

I continued.

“I spent ten years building a life without you. I won't pretend that disappears because you can write a check.”

He looked down.

“I understand.”

I studied him.

“Do you?”

He nodded.

“I'm learning.”

I smiled faintly.

That was the difference between the Ethan I'd married and the man sitting across from me.

The younger Ethan had believed love meant solving problems.

The older Ethan was beginning to understand that sometimes love meant listening.

I continued working.

I'd built a successful event-planning company over the years.

It wasn't worth billions.

But it was mine.

I employed twelve people.

We organized weddings, corporate events, and charity fundraisers.

I loved the work.

Ethan attended one of my events as a guest.

He watched me coordinate vendors, solve problems, and direct a team.

Afterward, he approached me.

“You built all this?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

He looked impressed.

“Claire, this is incredible.”

I laughed.

“It's a small company.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

He looked around.

“You built something from nothing while raising two children.”

I felt my throat tighten.

For ten years, I'd wanted Ethan to understand what I'd survived.

Now he was finally seeing it.

May you like

And somehow, that mattered more than any apology.
