Chapter 4 - THE BLUE ROOM HAD NO WINDOWS

The “blue room” was behind the wine cellar.

Daniel had lived in the mansion for most of his life.

Never knew.

A decorative mahogany panel opened with a hidden latch.

Police entered first under proper authority after evidence from the hallway incident justified a broader search and Maria disclosed possible evidence storage.

The room was small.

Windowless.

Walls painted faded navy.

Inside:

A desk.

Old fax machine.

Two locked cabinets.

Stacks of paper.

And a surveillance system.

Not modern.

Retired hardware.

The room belonged to Daniel’s father.

Or once had.

Then Charles used it.

Logs proved access.

So did fingerprints.

Inside the first cabinet were historic Whitmore family documents.

Private settlements.

Employment agreements.

Security memos.

Nothing immediately illegal.

Then:

ANDREW W.

A full file.

Daniel’s knees weakened.

Surveillance photographs.

Andrew meeting Maria.

Andrew entering Westbridge offices at night.

Andrew at Santa Barbara marina.

Andrew buying marine fuel two days before his disappearance.

Who was monitoring him?

A private security contractor.

Hart Meridian Risk Services.

Daniel stared.

Vanessa’s father’s company did more than healthcare consulting.

It provided corporate intelligence.

The second cabinet contained something worse.

After Andrew’s boat explosion, Hart Meridian continued surveillance.

Nevada.

Arizona.

Mexico.

California.

Andrew was tracked for almost two years.

Then the records stopped.

One memo:

Subject aware of observation. Relocation unknown.

Another:

Family principal requests no direct contact until recovery of materials.

Family principal.

Which family member?

Redacted.

Then a payment ledger.

Whitmore Holdings funds had paid Hart Meridian Risk Services.

Approved by:

Charles Whitmore.

Daniel felt sick.

His uncle funded the surveillance.

But did Daniel’s father know?

Maybe.

The old man could no longer answer easily after his stroke.

Still alive.

Living in private care.

Daniel had visited every Sunday.

Never asked whether Andrew’s death was more complicated than it appeared.

Then police found recordings.

Security feeds from the mansion.

One dated three weeks earlier.

Vanessa entering the blue room.

She knew it existed.

Another:

Charles.

Two months earlier.

Another:

Maria.

Four days earlier.

That surprised Daniel.

Maria had discovered the room.

That was why Vanessa attacked her.

Or part of why.

Then investigators recovered video from the night of the broken mirror.

Maria enters blue room at 11:42 p.m.

Leaves at 11:51 carrying a folder.

Vanessa appears at 11:53.

Follows.

Hall camera captures confrontation without sound.

Maria backs away.

Vanessa grabs the folder.

Maria resists.

Vanessa shoves her.

Maria crashes into the antique mirror.

Glass explodes.

Maria falls.

Vanessa stands over her.

Then—

instead of calling for help—

she starts dragging Maria away.

Exactly what Daniel saw.

No drunken attack.

No confusion.

Evidence.

The folder?

Missing.

Then a detective asked:

“What was in it?”

Daniel did not know.

Maria did.

At the hospital she whispered:

“Andrew’s new name.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

The file contained a current private-investigator report.

Subject:

Samuel Reed.

The name written on Andrew’s photograph.

Andrew had created a new identity for safety.

And Vanessa now had confirmation he was alive.

“Why would Vanessa care?”

Maria looked terrified.

“Because Andrew has the original Westbridge ledgers.”

“Where?”

“He never told me.”

“Does Charles know?”

“Probably.”

“Does Vanessa?”

“Now she knows Andrew came back.”

Then Maria revealed the last missing piece.

Andrew returned to California because he believed enough people involved in the original scheme had left Whitmore Holdings that he could finally expose it safely.

He contacted Maria.

Met Noah.

Then investigated quietly.

What did he find?

The scheme never ended.

It changed.

Old overbilling stopped.

A new system appeared through procurement rebates and charitable vendor partnerships.

Smaller.

More sophisticated.

And the person helping manage those relationships?

Vanessa Hart.

Daniel stared.

“My fiancée doesn’t work for Whitmore.”

“Not officially.”

She chaired a nonprofit:

Hart Children’s Initiative.

It partnered with Whitmore Foundation.

Fundraisers.

Hospital donations.

Vendor grants.

Andrew believed charitable partnerships were being used to steer procurement contracts toward companies connected to Vanessa’s family trust.

Not necessarily criminal by itself.

But undisclosed conflicts.

Kickbacks potentially.

Hidden related-party relationships.

Then Maria said:

“Andrew told me Vanessa wasn’t the architect.”

“Who was?”

She looked at him.

“Charles.”

Of course.

The uncle who raised Andrew after their father became emotionally distant.

The uncle still welcomed at every Whitmore Thanksgiving.

The uncle who had called Daniel “son” after his mother died.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Charles.

He answered.

“Daniel.”

“Uncle.”

“I heard there was trouble at the house.”

“How?”

Silence.

Then:

“Vanessa called me.”

Possible.

“Where is she?”

“She’s frightened.”

“She should be.”

Charles’s voice hardened.

“Don’t be dramatic.”

Daniel looked around the blue room.

His brother’s surveillance file lay open.

“I found Andrew’s file.”

Nothing.

For almost five seconds.

Then Charles said:

“You need to listen very carefully.”

Daniel’s skin went cold.

“Andrew is dangerous.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Why?”

“He has spent six years trying to destroy this family.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at the photographs.

“He spent six years trying to survive it.”

Charles exhaled.

Then:

“You have no idea what he did.”

“What did he do?”

“He stole records.”

“Records proving fraud?”

Silence.

Daniel continued:

“Where is my brother?”

Charles said one sentence.

“Ask yourself why a man who supposedly loves his son has stayed hidden for seven years.”

Then hung up.

Daniel stared at the phone.

The question hurt because it was fair.

Andrew might be a victim.

He had also left Maria and Noah to live in fear for years.

Both could be true.

Daniel needed answers from Andrew himself.

And now he knew where to start.

Mojave.

Route 58.

May you like

Samuel Reed.
