Chapter 8 - THE JANITOR WHO OWNED AN EMPIRE

Ethan Bell was thirty-three.

Quiet.

Polite.

Almost painfully shy.

He arrived at the restaurant every morning before six, cleaned the floors, repaired broken fixtures, and left before the dinner crowd arrived.

He wore faded jeans and work boots.

He ate peanut-butter sandwiches from a brown paper bag.

And he always left a dollar in the staff tip jar, even though he rarely ordered anything.

I had known him for four years.

Never once had I imagined he might be the missing heir to the Moretti family fortune.

Gabriel stared at the photograph.

"Are you certain?"

I nodded.

"That's Ethan."

Rebecca looked at me.

"Where can we find him?"

I gave her the restaurant's address.

Then hesitated.

"Please don't send armed men."

Gabriel looked at me.

"Why?"

"Because Ethan is a good person. He doesn't deserve to be dragged into this like a criminal."

Gabriel considered that.

Then nodded.

"We'll do it properly."

The next morning, Rebecca approached Ethan at work.

I was there.

So was Gabriel.

Ethan looked startled when he saw us.

"Mara?"

I smiled nervously.

"Hi."

He glanced at Gabriel.

Then at Rebecca's badge.

"Am I in trouble?"

"No," Rebecca said gently. "We need to ask you some questions about your family."

Ethan's expression changed.

"My family?"

She nodded.

"Do you know your birth parents?"

He shook his head.

"I was adopted."

My stomach tightened.

"Do you know where?"

"Rhode Island."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"Ethan, did your adoptive parents ever tell you anything about your early childhood?"

Ethan frowned.

"Not much."

Then he touched his left cheek.

"My mother said I had this birthmark when they brought me home."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Rebecca explained the investigation carefully.

She did not promise that Ethan was the heir.

She told him about the records, the photograph, and the need for independent verification.

Ethan listened in stunned silence.

Finally, he laughed.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"You're telling me I might be related to the Morettis?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Possibly."

Ethan stared at him.

"The people who own half the waterfront?"

"Yes."

Ethan looked at me.

"Is this a joke?"

I shook my head.

"No."

He sat down.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered:

"My parents always told me they found me because someone wanted me to have a normal life."

I felt tears sting my eyes.

Over the following days, investigators verified adoption records and arranged voluntary genetic testing.

The results confirmed that Ethan was Luciano Moretti's biological son.

The missing heir.

The child who had survived the warehouse fire.

When Gabriel received the results, he called Ethan personally.

He didn't demand a meeting.

He didn't summon him to a mansion.

He asked whether Ethan would be willing to talk.

Ethan agreed.

They met in a quiet public garden overlooking the harbor.

Gabriel brought the photograph of Luciano and Adriana.

Ethan stared at it for a long time.

Then asked:

"Did they love me?"

Gabriel's face changed.

"Yes."

"How do you know?"

Gabriel looked at the photograph.

"Because they risked everything to get you out."

Ethan began crying.

Gabriel sat beside him.

Neither man spoke.

For the first time, the Moretti family had an heir who hadn't been raised to fear power.

And that frightened the people who had spent twenty-three years stealing it.
