Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME BACK

I had imagined seeing my mother again a thousand times.

Sometimes she ran toward me.

Sometimes she apologized.

Sometimes she explained everything.

In none of those imagined reunions did she arrive wearing a gray coat, carrying a canvas bag, and looking over her shoulder as though someone might follow her through the revolving doors.

She was fifty.

Her hair had gone almost completely silver.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

But her eyes were the same.

"Mara."

I stood frozen.

My mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then she began crying.

"I'm sorry."

I crossed the room.

For a moment, I wanted to embrace her.

Instead, I stopped.

Eleven years.

Eleven birthdays.

Eleven Christmases.

Eleven years of wondering whether I had done something to make my own mother leave.

"Where were you?"

Her face crumpled.

"Mara—"

"Where?"

Gabriel quietly dismissed the staff.

Rebecca remained.

My mother looked at the detective.

"You're investigating Luciano Moretti."

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Then it's happening again."

We sat in a private conference room.

My mother placed the canvas bag on the table.

Inside were notebooks, old photographs, and a small brass key.

She looked at Gabriel.

"Your uncle tried to leave the organization."

Gabriel stiffened.

"Luciano?"

She nodded.

"He discovered that the family trust was being used to hide stolen property and launder money through legitimate shipping companies. He wanted to expose it."

"And my father?" Gabriel asked.

Evelyn hesitated.

"Your father was afraid of losing everything."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"Did he arrange the fire?"

"I don't know."

She looked down.

"But he knew it was going to happen."

Silence.

My mother explained that Luciano and Adriana had planned to disappear with their infant son.

Thomas Quinn helped prepare new identities.

Evelyn handled the financial documents.

But someone discovered the plan.

The warehouse burned.

Luciano and Adriana were reported dead.

The baby vanished.

"What happened to the child?" Gabriel asked.

Evelyn's hands trembled.

"I helped move him."

"Where?"

She shook her head.

"I can't tell you yet."

I stared.

"Mom."

Her eyes filled.

"Mara, please."

I stood.

"No."

She looked up.

"You disappeared for eleven years. You don't get to come back and ask me to trust another secret."

Tears ran down her cheeks.

"I left because someone threatened you."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Evelyn looked confused.

"What?"

"That they lied to protect somebody. That they disappeared to protect somebody. That keeping people ignorant is love."

I shook my head.

"It's not."

My mother covered her face.

After a long silence, she whispered:

"You're right."

I sat down.

She reached for the brass key.

"This opens a safe-deposit box. The contents will explain why I left."

Rebecca took the key for documentation.

"Where's the box?"

Evelyn gave her the bank information.

Then looked at Gabriel.

"There's something you need to understand."

He waited.

"The heir isn't the only person being hunted."

My mother turned toward me.

"The people who killed Luciano believe Mara knows where the missing ledger is."

I stared.

"What ledger?"

Evelyn's voice broke.

"The one your grandfather taught you to read."

Then the conference room door opened.

Vincent Salerno stood in the doorway.

He looked at my mother.

And smiled.

"Hello, Evelyn."

Her face went white.

May you like

She whispered:

"You."
