Chapter 6 - THE LETTER RICHARD NEVER SENT

Evelyn found the letter inside an old cedar chest.
It had been hidden beneath a stack of sailing charts.
The envelope was addressed to Julian.
In Richard Sterling's handwriting.
Evelyn sat beside me as I opened it carefully.
Her hands trembled.
"Read it," she whispered.
I hesitated.
"Are you sure?"
She nodded.
The letter began:
My son,
There are things I should have told you while I still had the courage.
Richard explained that Daniel had been born before his marriage to Evelyn.
He admitted he'd failed Daniel by keeping him separate from the family.
He described the New Bedford trust.
And his promise to care for Ethan after Daniel's death.
Then came the final paragraph.
If Carter ever tells you the dock was sold, do not believe him. The property belongs to the trust, and the trust exists for Ethan. I have protected it as best I can. But I fear the greatest danger may come from inside our own family.
Evelyn began crying.
I stopped reading.
She shook her head.
"Finish."
The last sentence was short.
Julian, be better than I was.
When Julian returned that evening, Evelyn handed him the letter.
He read it standing beside the fireplace.
Then sat down slowly.
For a long time, he didn't speak.
Finally, he whispered:
"Dad knew."
Evelyn nodded.
"He suspected Carter."
Julian looked devastated.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Evelyn wiped her cheeks.
"He was afraid."
Julian stared at the letter.
Then said:
"Fear doesn't excuse what happened."
Evelyn nodded.
"No."
He looked at his mother.
"But neither does silence."
She lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
Julian reached for her hand.
"I know."
That night, Julian called Ethan.
He asked whether Ethan would like to read the letter.
Ethan hesitated.
May you like
Then said yes.
And for the first time, the family secret began moving toward the truth.
