Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT HIM TO STAY

Julian and I grew closer slowly.

Not through grand gestures.

Not through expensive gifts.

But through ordinary moments.

Coffee in the kitchen.

Conversations after Evelyn fell asleep.

Walks along the harbor.

And quiet evenings when neither of us needed to pretend we were stronger than we felt.

One night, Julian found me reading in the library.

He stood in the doorway.

"Can I ask you something?"

I smiled.

"Of course."

"Would you have told me the truth that night if you knew Victoria would fire you?"

I looked at him.

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Even with your brother's treatment?"

My throat tightened.

"Yes."

He studied me.

"Why?"

I closed the book.

"Because your mother was frightened."

Julian looked down.

I continued.

"She had spent her life caring for everyone else. Somebody needed to care for her."

He sat beside me.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then he said:

"I've spent years building a company."

I smiled faintly.

"I noticed."

He laughed.

"But I forgot how to be present in my own home."

I looked at him.

"You're here now."

He nodded.

"Because you made me look."

A few weeks later, Julian asked me to dinner.

Not as his mother's caregiver.

Not as an employee.

As Clara.

I hesitated.

He understood.

"We can wait until your employment arrangement changes."

I smiled.

"That would be better."

Julian nodded.

"Then we'll do it properly."

We arranged for another qualified caregiver to take over Evelyn's primary care.

I remained close to the family, but my employment relationship ended before Julian and I began dating.

Evelyn pretended to be surprised.

She wasn't convincing.
