Dominic began changing his life long before he asked Chloe to be part of it.
He sold several businesses connected to criminal operations.
Cooperated with investigations where required.
Separated himself from associates who refused to leave violence behind.
The process was difficult.
Some people threatened him.
Others accused him of weakness.
Dominic accepted the consequences.
He had spent years trying to avenge Gabriel.
Now he wanted to honor him.
He established a scholarship for students pursuing careers in logistics and maritime safety.
The program was independently administered.
Chloe attended the first award ceremony.
She watched Dominic speak about his brother.
His voice trembled.
“Gabriel believed that business should create opportunity, not fear.”
The room grew quiet.
“He wanted to build something honest.”
Dominic looked down.
“I wish I'd listened sooner.”
Afterward, Chloe found him outside.
He stood beneath the evening sky.
She approached.
“Are you okay?”
He smiled faintly.
“Mostly.”
She took his hand.
“Gabriel would be proud.”
Dominic looked at her.
“You think so?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“Thank you.”
Their relationship deepened slowly.
They traveled.
Cooked together.
Argued about music.
Laughed over terrible movies.
Chloe discovered Dominic was hopeless at assembling furniture.
He discovered she loved dancing in the kitchen.
They built routines.
Trust.
A life.
One evening, Dominic found Chloe standing beside the Osprey.
The boat had been restored.
Fresh paint.
New sails.
A polished wooden deck.
He stepped beside her.
“Thinking about your father?”
She nodded.
“He'd love this.”
Dominic smiled.
“He'd probably tell me I used the wrong varnish.”
Chloe laughed.
“Absolutely.”
They stood quietly.
Then Dominic said:
“I love you.”
Chloe turned.
He looked nervous.
For the first time, the most feared man in Manhattan looked like an ordinary man afraid of rejection.
She smiled.
“I love you too.”
He closed his eyes.
