Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL THAT EXPOSED THE TRUTH

Liam's trial began the following spring.

The courtroom was crowded.

Reporters filled the benches.

Financial experts testified.

Investigators explained the shell companies.

Witnesses described the forged documents.

And Samantha testified about the wedding scheme.

Chloe sat beside Naomi.

Her hands trembled.

Dominic sat several rows behind her.

He didn't try to take over.

He simply stayed.

When Chloe testified, Liam refused to look at her.

She described the bridal suite.

The folder.

The library.

The conversation she'd overheard.

The service corridor.

The rain.

The car.

The fear.

Then the prosecutor asked:

“Did you ever agree to manage Osprey Holdings?”

Chloe looked toward the jury.

“No.”

“Did you authorize the transfers?”

“No.”

“Did you sign the documents?”

“No.”

Her voice strengthened.

“I refused.”

The defense challenged her memory.

Her grief.

Her relationship with Dominic.

But the documents supported her account.

The signatures were absent.

The financial records showed the transfers had been arranged before the wedding.

And the messages between Liam and Samantha revealed the plan.

Nathaniel Cross was charged separately in connection with the broader financial scheme.

The investigation into Gabriel's death continued.

Evidence suggested that Cross had concealed information about the circumstances surrounding Gabriel's final trip.

But prosecutors did not claim more than the evidence supported.

Chloe respected that.

Justice, she had learned, was not the same as revenge.

The jury convicted Liam on multiple fraud-related charges.

Chloe closed her eyes.

For a moment, she heard her father's voice.

Never sign anything you haven't read.

She smiled through tears.

Then stood.

May you like

And walked out of the courtroom.

Free.
