Chapter 15 - TOUCH ME WHERE THE WHOLE WORLD CAN SEE

Three years later, Serena stood in the ballroom of the Harrington Grand.
The same hotel.
The same city.
The same glittering skyline.
But everything else had changed.
The Margaret Learning House had expanded into four community centers.
Hundreds of children received tutoring, literacy support, and educational scholarships.
Serena had become a respected leader in Chicago's nonprofit community.
And Roman?
Roman had left the criminal empire behind.
His legitimate businesses operated under independent oversight.
He no longer measured his worth by how many men feared him.
He measured it by the life he was building.
With Serena.
That evening, the Harrington Grand hosted an awards ceremony honoring educational philanthropy.
Serena was receiving an award for her work.
Roman stood beside her.
He wore a black tuxedo.
His hair was beginning to show silver at the temples.
He looked older.
Softer.
Happier.
Serena smiled.
“Nervous?”
Roman raised an eyebrow.
“Me?”
She laughed.
“You're holding my hand very tightly.”
He looked down.
Then smiled.
“I like holding your hand.”
Her heart warmed.
During the ceremony, Serena delivered a speech.
She spoke about education.
Opportunity.
The importance of believing in children who had been overlooked.
Then she paused.
“Three years ago, I was a woman who had forgotten what it felt like to be seen.”
The ballroom grew quiet.
“I had spent so much time trying to become what other people expected that I nearly lost the person I wanted to be.”
Roman watched her.
His eyes filled.
Serena continued.
“But I learned something important.”
She smiled.
“Love should never require you to disappear.”
The audience applauded.
“And the people who truly love you will celebrate your growth, even when it changes the life they imagined.”
She looked toward Roman.
He smiled through his tears.
“Thank you.”
After the ceremony, the orchestra began playing.
Roman approached Serena.
He offered his hand.
“Mrs. Duca.”
She smiled.
“Mr. Duca.”
“May I have this dance?”
Serena looked at him.
Then placed her hand in his.
“I'd love to.”
They stepped onto the dance floor.
Roman wrapped his arm around her waist.
Serena rested her cheek against his shoulder.
Around them, hundreds of guests watched.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Journalists.
Former associates.
People who once believed Roman Duca was incapable of tenderness.
Roman didn't care.
He held his wife as though she were the most precious person in the world.
Halfway through the song, Serena looked up.
“Roman?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Do you remember what you told me on this balcony?”
His expression changed.
He nodded.
“Every word.”
She smiled gently.
“Never touch me in public.”
Roman closed his eyes.
“I'll regret those words for the rest of my life.”
Serena shook her head.
“You don't have to spend forever punishing yourself.”
He looked at her.
She continued.
“Just keep choosing differently.”
Roman smiled.
“I will.”
Then Serena took his hand and placed it against her cheek.
“Roman?”
“Yes?”
She smiled through her tears.
“Touch me where the whole world can see.”
His eyes filled.
He kissed her forehead.
Then her cheek.
Then her lips.
The ballroom erupted in applause.
But Roman barely heard it.
For once, he wasn't thinking about reputation.
Power.
Enemies.
Or what other men might think.
He was thinking about the woman in his arms.
The woman he'd almost lost.
The woman who had taught him that love wasn't something to hide.
It was something to honor.
Later that night, they stepped onto the balcony.
Chicago glittered beneath them.
Serena leaned against the railing.
Roman stood beside her.
He took her hand.
“Cold?”
“A little.”
He removed his jacket and placed it around her shoulders.
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
He kissed her temple.
They stood in silence.
Then Serena looked at him.
“Do you ever think about what would have happened if I'd left that night?”
Roman swallowed.
“Yes.”
“And?”
He looked toward the city.
“I think you would have built an extraordinary life.”
Serena smiled faintly.
“Without you?”
Roman nodded.
“Yes.”
She stared.
He continued.
“Because you were extraordinary before you married me.”
Her eyes filled.
“And you would have remained extraordinary even if you never came back.”
Serena looked down.
Roman gently lifted her hand.
“But I'm grateful you chose to give us another chance.”
She smiled through her tears.
“So am I.”
He kissed her fingers.
Then whispered:
“I love you, Serena.”
She smiled.
“I know.”
Roman laughed softly.
She wrapped her arms around him.
“And I love you too.”
Six months earlier, those words would have frightened her.
Now they felt safe.
Not because Roman was powerful.
Not because he could protect her from every danger.
But because he'd finally learned that love wasn't about control.
It was about trust.
Respect.
Honesty.
And choosing each other freely.
Serena rested her head against his chest.
Roman held her beneath the Chicago stars.
May you like
And this time, when she reached for him, he didn't pull away.
He held her closer.
