Chapter 12 - THE LETTER HE NEVER EXPECTED HER TO READ

Roman began changing his life.

Not with speeches.

With decisions.

He stepped away from criminal operations.

Cooperated with investigations where required.

Separated legitimate businesses from unlawful activities.

And accepted that rebuilding his life might cost him influence and wealth.

Some associates abandoned him.

Others threatened him.

Roman continued.

For the first time, he wanted a future that didn't depend on fear.

Serena watched from a distance.

She didn't rush back.

She continued working.

Building the foundation.

Traveling to schools.

Meeting donors.

Living.

And slowly, she began noticing something.

Roman no longer tried to control her.

He asked before visiting.

Respected her decisions.

And never once demanded that she return home.

One afternoon, Rosa Duca, Roman's elderly aunt, visited Serena.

She carried a small envelope.

“Serena, sweetheart.”

Serena smiled.

“Aunt Rosa.”

The older woman hugged her.

Then handed her the envelope.

“What is this?”

“A letter.”

“From Roman?”

Rosa nodded.

“He wrote it months ago.”

Serena frowned.

“Why didn't he send it?”

Rosa sighed.

“Because he thought you deserved peace more than another apology.”

Serena stared at the envelope.

Then opened it.

Serena,

I used to believe love was something I could protect by hiding it.

I was wrong.

I made you lonely in a house filled with everything money could buy.

I made you question your worth when you were the most extraordinary person in my life.

I told you never to touch me in public because I was afraid.

But the truth is, I was also a coward.

I was afraid of being vulnerable.

Afraid of needing someone.

Afraid that loving you openly would make me weak.

Instead, I became the kind of man who made his wife afraid to reach for him.

Serena began crying.

She continued.

I don't expect you to forgive me.

I don't expect you to return.

I only hope that one day, when you remember our marriage, you won't believe the way I treated you was a reflection of your value.

It wasn't.

It was a reflection of my failure.

You were always enough.

I was the one who didn't know how to love you properly.

Roman.

Serena pressed the letter against her chest.

For a long time, she couldn't speak.

Rosa sat beside her.

Then whispered, “He loves you.”

Serena nodded through her tears.

“I know.”

Rosa took her hand.

“But love isn't enough without change.”

Serena looked at her.

May you like

The older woman smiled sadly.

“And my nephew is finally learning that.”
