Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT HIM PEACE

Roman and Maya began dating slowly.

They went to small restaurants.

Walked beside the lake.

Visited bookstores.

Listened to jazz in quiet clubs.

Maya learned that Roman was more thoughtful than his reputation suggested.

He remembered small details.

Her favorite tea.

The books she wanted to read.

The way she preferred quiet mornings.

Roman learned that Maya was fiercely independent.

She did not want expensive gifts.

She wanted honesty.

Time.

Respect.

One evening, they sat on a bench overlooking Lake Michigan.

Roman took her hand.

"Maya."

She looked at him.

"Yes?"

"I love you."

She froze.

He smiled faintly.

"I know that's a lot."

She laughed nervously.

"Roman."

He continued.

"I don't expect you to say it back."

She looked down.

Then whispered:

"I love you too."

Roman stared.

She smiled.

"But I'm not giving up my career."

He laughed.

"I wouldn't ask you to."

"And I'm not moving into a mansion full of guards."

"Understood."

"And if we disagree, you don't get to end the conversation by being intimidating."

Roman smiled.

"I'll try."

Maya raised an eyebrow.

He corrected himself.

"I will."

She laughed.

Then kissed him.

Their relationship was not perfect.

Roman still struggled with control.

Maya still guarded her independence.

But they talked.

They listened.

And they learned.

Ethan welcomed Maya into his life.

Not as a replacement for Sofia.

But as another adult who cared about him.

Sofia supported the relationship.

She and Roman had built a respectful co-parenting partnership.

For the first time in years, Ethan felt safe.

His mother was alive.

His father was present.

And the woman who had knelt beside him in a restaurant had become someone he could trust.
