Chapter 5 - The Empire Built on Buried Names

The arrests triggered the largest scandal in Warren Development’s history.

Investigators uncovered offshore accounts, forged trust amendments and illegal property transfers stretching back twenty-five years.

Malcolm had created shell companies to purchase Warren land at reduced prices.

Nathan controlled several of them.

Victoria used the charitable foundation to transfer money, intimidate witnesses and pay medical expenses for loyal employees.

Pamela Ortiz was arrested after financial records proved Malcolm had paid more than two million dollars toward her clinic.

She initially insisted she had used Spencer’s genetic material to help Jocelyn.

Then prosecutors presented emails.

Pamela knew Jocelyn had been selected because of her bloodline.

She also knew Spencer had never consented.

Her tears could no longer disguise deliberate betrayal.

Jocelyn remained in the hospital for three weeks.

She had been imprisoned inside the mansion’s service tunnels since Dexter’s birth.

Malcolm’s men moved her between hidden rooms while Victoria continued hosting dinners and charity meetings above her.

Mrs. Mabel was devastated.

“I lived in that house,” she said. “I should have known.”

“You saved the baby,” Spencer replied.

“No. Charlee did.”

Charlee rarely left Jocelyn’s bedside.

For the first few days, she seemed afraid her sister would disappear again.

Jocelyn held her tightly.

“I’m not leaving.”

“You promised before.”

“I know.”

Promises meant little to a child who had lost too many people.

Trust returned through ordinary moments.

Breakfast together.

Stories before bed.

A hand still present the next morning.

Florence’s health declined after the kidnapping.

Doctors explained that her heart could not survive another major shock.

Spencer moved her into the mansion after repairs were completed.

She refused the grandest bedroom.

“I spent enough years watching rich people get lost in large rooms.”

She chose a sunny room overlooking the garden.

Meanwhile, Warren Development’s board attempted to remove Spencer.

Several directors claimed the family scandal made him unfit to lead.

Nathan’s allies controlled nearly half the votes.

At the emergency meeting, Spencer entered with Jocelyn, Florence and Charlee.

Dexter slept in a carrier against his chest.

One director scoffed.

“This is a corporate meeting, not a family reunion.”

Spencer placed the original Cooper trust on the table.

“Today it is both.”

The trust’s fraud clause transferred Victoria and Nathan’s voting shares to Danielle’s surviving descendants.

Jocelyn and Charlee now controlled twenty-eight percent.

Spencer controlled twenty-four.

Together, they held a majority.

The boardroom became silent.

Jocelyn stood.

“My mother spent her life being told she did not belong to this family. Today, her daughters will decide what happens to the company that erased her.”

She voted to remove every director connected to Nathan’s schemes.

Spencer supported her.

The old leadership collapsed in less than an hour.

But Spencer refused to keep the company unchanged.

“We built towers while hiding people beneath them,” he said. “That ends now.”

He created an employee ownership program.

He ordered an independent review of every Warren-funded housing project.

He converted the family foundation into a public trust overseen by community representatives.

Jocelyn established a division supporting young mothers, homeless families and children aging out of foster care.

Casey agreed to advise it.

Their work brought Casey and Spencer closer.

She challenged him constantly.

She refused private jets when commercial flights were available.

She criticized his habit of solving emotional problems with money.

“You can’t purchase trust,” she told him.

“I’m beginning to understand that.”

“You offered Charlee a pony yesterday.”

“She asked for one.”

“She asked whether ponies liked apples.”

“That sounded like a request.”

Casey laughed.

It was the first time Spencer realized how much he wanted to hear that sound again.

The criminal trials began six months later.

Malcolm accepted a plea agreement and testified against Victoria and Nathan.

He admitted arranging Jocelyn’s kidnapping and Dexter’s attempted murder.

Nathan was convicted of conspiracy, kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud and obstruction.

He received forty-eight years.

Pamela received sixteen years for medical fraud, conspiracy and unlawful use of genetic material.

Victoria refused every plea agreement.

At trial, she blamed Charles Warren, her dead husband, Malcolm, Nathan and even Spencer.

She described herself as a woman trapped in a loveless marriage.

The prosecutor asked one question.

“Did your unhappiness force you to imprison Jocelyn Cooper beneath your home?”

Victoria said nothing.

She was convicted and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after thirty-five years.

Outside the courthouse, reporters asked Spencer whether justice had been served.

He looked at Charlee holding Florence’s hand.

“Justice cannot return the years they stole. It can only stop them from stealing more.”

That evening, Florence asked Spencer to bring Dexter to her room.

She held the baby against her chest.

“He has Lena’s mouth,” she whispered.

“You remember my mother?”

“Every day.”

“Was she afraid?”

“Yes. But she loved you before she ever saw you.”

Spencer looked down.

All his life, he believed he had entered the world unwanted.

Florence placed her hand over his.

May you like

“You were loved. The people who raised you simply hid the evidence.”
