Chapter 5 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE PLAN

Vanessa refused further questioning.

Her attorney arrived.

She was taken into custody while investigators waited for laboratory results and reviewed potential charges.

Elena went to the hospital.

Daniel stayed beside her.

For six hours, doctors monitored the baby.

Finally, an obstetrician smiled.

“Everything looks stable.”

Daniel lowered his head against Elena's hand.

She felt his shoulders shake.

Only then did she understand how frightened he had been.

But relief didn't erase the distance between them.

“You knew she hated me,” Elena said.

Daniel looked up.

“I knew you two didn't get along.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You knew she was undermining me.”

Daniel was silent.

“You called it jealousy.”

“I was wrong.”

“You said Vanessa was family.”

“I know.”

“You asked me to be patient.”

“I know.”

Each answer hurt him.

It should.

Elena had spent months questioning her own instincts because Daniel kept translating Vanessa's behavior into harmless misunderstandings.

Finally Daniel said:

“I failed you.”

Elena looked toward the fetal monitor.

“Yes.”

No easy absolution.

No dramatic embrace that fixed everything.

Daniel nodded.

“What do I do?”

“Help me find the truth.”

He did.

---

The voice on Vanessa's call was identified through another recording.

Adrian Blake.

Daniel's cousin.

Chief financial officer of Howard Development.

And Arthur Howard's nephew.

Daniel almost refused to believe it.

Then investigators played the recording.

Adrian's voice was unmistakable.

He and Vanessa had been communicating for at least seven months.

Financial records revealed payments from Adrian to a private investigator who followed Elena.

Another payment went to a physician's assistant who had accessed portions of Elena's prenatal medical records without authorization.

Adrian had also searched trust documents.

Why?

Howard Development was in trouble.

Very serious trouble.

Adrian had concealed millions in losses from failed commercial projects.

He had used company guarantees without board approval.

If Daniel discovered the full exposure, Adrian could lose everything.

Arthur's estate contained assets Adrian believed could stabilize the company.

But the trust prevented him from reaching them.

Vanessa offered another route.

Discredit Elena.

Break the marriage.

Position Vanessa close to Daniel.

Then use her status as successor trustee to gain leverage over the estate.

The pregnancy accelerated their timeline.

Elena's unborn child would soon make the trust structure far harder to challenge.

So Vanessa escalated.

Fake theft.

Anonymous affair allegations.

Medication tampering.

Finally, the staircase.

The plan had evolved from removing Elena from the marriage to potentially removing her altogether.

---

The laboratory report arrived the next morning.

The altered capsules did not contain prenatal vitamins.

They contained a prescription medication not prescribed to Elena and potentially dangerous during pregnancy.

Daniel read the report once.

Then walked into the bathroom and became sick.

Elena remained sitting in the hospital bed.

Her hand rested over her stomach.

For eleven days, Vanessa had smiled while watching her pretend to swallow those pills.

Eleven breakfasts.

Eleven performances.

Eleven attempted confirmations.

Ruiz entered.

“We have enough for additional charges.”

Elena looked at him.

“And Adrian?”

“We're getting a warrant.”

But Adrian was gone.

His house was empty.

His company phone had been abandoned at Dallas Love Field.

His passport was missing.

And forty minutes before police reached his home, someone had transferred $2.4 million from a Howard Development reserve account.

Daniel stared at the transaction.

“This isn't just about Vanessa anymore.”

Ruiz shook his head.

“No.”

Then his phone rang.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Elena asked.

Ruiz ended the call.

“Adrian didn't go to the airport.”

“Where did he go?”

“Your lake house.”

Daniel went pale.

The lake house contained Arthur Howard's private archives.

Including original trust records.

Adrian wasn't running.

He was destroying evidence.
