Chapter 8 - THE BETRAYAL AT PIER NINETEEN

Gabriel refused to believe Victor had betrayed him.

“He's been with me for eleven years.”

I looked at him.

“People can lie for eleven years.”

“He saved my life.”

“So did my mother.”

Gabriel stared.

I continued quietly.

“And even she kept secrets.”

We sat in silence.

Then he nodded.

“Laura can investigate.”

It was the first time Gabriel had allowed an independent investigator to examine someone inside his organization without controlling the process himself.

---

The evidence came quickly.

Victor had accessed Crown Harbor property records.

He had communicated with Paul repeatedly.

He had also concealed information about the security cameras at Pier Nineteen, where the old shipping fire investigation had begun.

Laura obtained records through authorized requests and cooperation from company counsel.

The documents showed that Victor had been receiving payments from a company associated with Paul.

When confronted, Victor denied wrongdoing.

Then he disappeared.

---

That evening, Gabriel received a message.

A photograph of Elena's old necklace.

The silver pendant was shaped like a small star.

Gabriel stared at it.

“She was wearing that the night she died.”

Below the photograph was a location.

PIER NINETEEN. MIDNIGHT. BRING THE RECORDS.

I looked at him.

“Don't go alone.”

“I won't.”

“Don't take a gun and turn this into another war.”

He studied me.

“Maya—”

“You told me you wanted to change.”

“I do.”

“Then prove it when it matters.”

He closed his eyes.

Then called Laura.

---

The meeting was arranged with investigators aware of the threat.

Gabriel agreed to provide the records through his attorney rather than privately exchange evidence.

But Paul arrived at Pier Nineteen with a different intention.

He called Gabriel from inside an abandoned office.

“You think the police can protect you from your own history?”

Gabriel stood beside Laura.

“What do you want?”

Paul laughed.

“Your father's empire.”

“It's not yours.”

“It wasn't his either.”

Gabriel frowned.

“What?”

Paul's voice hardened.

“Your father stole Crown Harbor from mine. Elena found the documents. She was going to tell everyone.”

Gabriel went silent.

Then Paul continued.

“Victor helped me recover what was ours.”

I felt cold.

Paul wasn't merely an angry business partner.

He had been preparing revenge for years.

---

Suddenly, a warehouse alarm sounded.

Smoke began pouring from a loading bay.

Workers inside shouted for help.

The meeting had been a diversion.

Paul had arranged an electrical fire in a storage building containing records and equipment.

Investigators ordered everyone away from the area while firefighters responded.

Gabriel saw two workers trapped behind a locked gate.

He moved toward them.

I grabbed his arm.

“Gabriel!”

He stopped.

I pointed toward the emergency crews arriving.

“Let them do their job.”

His expression changed.

For a moment, I saw the old instinct.

Take control.

Rush toward danger.

Prove he could fix everything.

Then he stepped back.

He told the firefighters what he knew about the building layout.

Minutes later, both workers were rescued.

---

Paul attempted to leave through a service road.

Police stopped him.

Victor was arrested nearby after surveillance evidence placed him at the scene.

The fire was contained.

Nobody died.

And for the first time, Gabriel had faced betrayal without ordering anyone to disappear.

But the consequences were only beginning.

The old financial records implicated companies he currently controlled.

Some contained evidence of transactions from his father's era.

Others raised questions about his own management.

Laura approached him.

“Gabriel, you'll need independent counsel.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Then he looked at me.

His face was pale.

“Maya, this could destroy everything.”

I took a breath.

“Maybe everything you built on fear.”

He stared.

I continued.

May you like

“But that doesn't mean it has to destroy you.”
