Chapter 1 - A STAIN SHE COULDN’T LEAVE

SHE TOUCHED THE MAFIA BOSS NO ONE DARED TOUCH, THEN REFUSED TO BELONG TO HIM

\*\*Chapter 1: A Stain She Couldn’t Leave

Gabriel Marino’s business partner attacked him inside my diner, and his men dragged the traitor away bleeding. But when I broke the one rule everyone feared and touched the mafia boss myself, his bodyguard reached for his gun, and Gabriel did something nobody expected: he ordered the man to stand down.

My name is Maya Brooks. I was twenty-four, behind on rent, and surviving on coffee and aching feet. An eviction notice waited on my kitchen counter in a pink envelope, a color that felt almost cruel.

That Tuesday night, Gabriel walked into the Silver Spoon with three men.

Conversations died. Even the silverware seemed to go quiet.

Jimmy, my manager, grabbed my arm.

“Booth four. Black coffee. And Maya? Stay three feet away from him.”

Everyone knew why.

Men who touched Gabriel Marino had a habit of disappearing.

I approached with a coffee pot, keeping my eyes on the cups.

Across from Gabriel sat Paul, a sweating man demanding more money from their shipping operation.

“The docks are crawling with federal agents,” Paul snapped. “I deserve a bigger cut.”

“The risk is already included in your share,” Gabriel replied calmly.

Paul slammed his fist against the table.

Then he lunged with a butter knife.

The blade sliced Gabriel’s cheek.

Before I could scream, Victor, Gabriel’s bodyguard, smashed Paul’s face against the table.

Two men dragged him through the back exit.

Nobody asked where they were taking him.

Gabriel simply sat down again, blood sliding toward his jaw.

“Clean this up,” Jimmy whispered.

I wanted to refuse.

Then I remembered the thirty-two dollars in my bank account.

I returned with a warm towel and wiped the spilled water.

That's when I noticed the blood on Gabriel's face.

Maybe exhaustion had ruined my judgment.

Maybe seventeen hours on my feet had made me forget who he was.

Because without thinking, I reached forward.

And gently wiped his cheek.

Victor’s hand flew toward his gun.

The entire diner went silent.

Gabriel stared at me.

His eyes widened, but not with anger.

He looked almost frightened.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He slowly raised his hand.

I closed my eyes, expecting the worst.

Instead, I heard two words.

“Leave it.”

Victor hesitated.

“Boss?”

“I said leave it.”

When I opened my eyes, Gabriel was studying me as though I'd awakened something he thought was dead.

Then he walked away.

Victor followed, leaving a hundred-dollar bill behind.

Jimmy immediately pocketed it.

“For the broken glass,” he muttered.

He sent me home without another word.

That night, I locked my apartment door twice and started packing a bag.

I thought Gabriel Marino might come looking for me.

What I didn't know was that no one had touched him without triggering panic in ten years.

Until me.

And while I was planning to disappear, the most dangerous man in the city was wondering why he wanted my touch again.

But one thing was certain.

He could have the entire city at his feet. He would never own me.
