Chapter 15 - THE WEDDING SHE CHOSE

Three years after Paige walked toward an altar believing she had no future, she stood in another bridal suite.

This time, the dress fit.

Soft ivory silk.

A simple neckline.

No painful corset.

No bruises hidden beneath makeup.

Helen adjusted the final button.

Paige looked at herself in the mirror.

She smiled.

“You look beautiful,” Helen said.

Paige nodded.

“I feel beautiful.”

Outside, the garden was filled with flowers.

Lucia stood beside Gabriel.

June sat in the front row.

Vivian smiled from beneath a white parasol.

Arthur was not there.

Paige had chosen not to invite him.

She had forgiven herself for wanting a father who would protect her.

But she no longer confused forgiveness with allowing someone back into her life.

When the music began, Paige walked alone.

Not because nobody wanted to accompany her.

But because she wanted to walk toward her future on her own feet.

Gabriel waited beneath a white floral arch.

His eyes filled when he saw her.

Paige smiled.

She reached him.

He took her hands.

“You're beautiful.”

She laughed softly.

“You already said that.”

He smiled.

“I'll keep saying it.”

The officiant began.

When the time came for vows, Paige looked at Gabriel.

“Once, I believed marriage meant giving someone the power to hurt me.”

Her voice trembled.

“But you showed me that love can be a place where I remain free.”

She smiled through tears.

“I promise to love you honestly.”

“To stand beside you.”

“And to never stop being myself.”

Gabriel swallowed.

Then he spoke.

“I spent years believing power meant control.”

He looked at Lucia.

Then at Paige.

“But you taught me that love means choice.”

His voice broke.

“I promise to respect yours.”

“To protect without possessing.”

“And to spend every day becoming someone worthy of the life we're building.”

They exchanged rings.

And when the officiant pronounced them married, Gabriel kissed Paige gently.

The guests applauded.

Lucia cried.

Helen laughed through her tears.

Later, during the reception, Paige stood beside the garden gate.

She looked toward the path.

Three years earlier, she had walked down an aisle toward a man who treated her like property.

Today, she had walked toward a man who loved her freedom as much as he loved her.

Gabriel approached.

“Everything okay?”

Paige smiled.

“Everything's different.”

He took her hand.

“Good different?”

She laughed.

“The best kind.”

They walked toward the dance floor.

The music rose.

The garden lights shimmered.

And Paige, once a woman who believed no one would ever stop her wedding, finally understood the truth.

The man who interrupted that ceremony had opened a door.

But she had been the one brave enough to walk through it.

And this time, the life waiting on the other side belonged entirely to her.
