Chapter 13 - THE DAY NOAH CALLED HIM FAMILY

A year passed.
The legal proceedings continued.
Marco faced serious criminal charges arising from the conspiracy.
Ethan was held accountable for the break-in and threats.
Jack faced consequences for his own past conduct, including financial penalties and restrictions on his business activities.
He accepted that rebuilding his life would take time.
Meanwhile, Noah grew.
He lost his first front tooth.
Built a robot that could move across the kitchen floor.
And began asking Jack to help with school projects.
One Saturday, the three of us were working on a cardboard model of a city.
Noah held up a tiny bridge.
“Jack?”
“Yes?”
“Can you glue this?”
Jack took the bridge.
“Of course.”
Noah watched him.
Then asked:
“Are you my family?”
Jack froze.
I looked up.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Jack set down the glue.
He looked at Noah.
“That's something you and your mom get to decide.”
Noah considered.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
He picked up another piece of cardboard.
A minute later, he said:
“I think you are.”
Jack looked at me.
His eyes filled.
I smiled through tears.
Noah continued working.
As though he'd said something completely ordinary.
And perhaps, to him, he had.
Because family wasn't always the people who shared your blood.
Sometimes it was the people who showed up.
May you like
Stayed.
And kept choosing you.
