Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED APOLOGIZING

I quit the Maragold Room.
Victor was under investigation.
The restaurant's owners had appointed new management.
They offered me a promotion.
I declined.
For three months, I'd been treated as though my body made me less valuable.
For years before that, Ethan had taught me the same lie.
I was done building my life around people who needed me to feel small.
I enrolled in a hospitality management program.
Ruth helped with Noah.
I took evening classes.
Worked part-time at a family-owned café.
And began saving money.
Jack offered to pay for everything.
I refused.
Not because I didn't appreciate the gesture.
Because I needed to know I could build something without becoming dependent on another powerful man.
He accepted that.
No arguments.
No pressure.
Just support when I asked for it.
One afternoon, I stood in front of the mirror wearing a red dress.
It was the first dress I'd bought for myself in years.
It fit my body.
Not the body Ethan wanted.
Not the body Victor mocked.
Mine.
Noah appeared in the doorway.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“You look like a superhero.”
I laughed.
“Do I?”
He nodded.
“A red one.”
I knelt beside him.
“Thank you, baby.”
He touched my cheek.
“Are you happy?”
I looked at my reflection.
For the first time, I didn't immediately search for something to criticize.
May you like
“Yes,” I whispered.
“I think I am.”
