Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO WOULDN'T TAKE HIS MONEY

Elias offered Avery a job.
A very expensive job.
He placed a contract on the table.
She read the first page.
Then the second.
Then stared at him.
“Are you serious?”
Elias smiled.
“Yes.”
“Two hundred thousand dollars?”
“Plus benefits.”
Avery laughed.
“Elias.”
“What?”
“I work in hospitality.”
“You saved three hundred people.”
“That doesn't make me qualified to run corporate security.”
He smiled.
“Fair.”
She closed the folder.
“Then why are you offering?”
Elias hesitated.
“Because I want you near me.”
Avery stared.
He continued.
“And because I admire you.”
She looked down.
For a moment, she was tempted.
The salary would change her life.
She could pay her bills.
Help June.
Buy a bigger apartment.
But something felt wrong.
She looked up.
“I can't.”
Elias's expression changed.
“Why?”
“Because I don't want to become dependent on you.”
He nodded slowly.
Avery continued.
“I want to build something of my own.”
Elias studied her.
Then smiled.
“Good.”
She blinked.
“Good?”
“Yes.”
He took the contract back.
“Then tell me what you want.”
Avery thought for a moment.
Then smiled.
“I want to start a hospitality training program for people who can't afford traditional education.”
Elias leaned forward.
“Tell me more.”
Over the next several months, Avery developed the program.
She worked with community colleges.
Hotels.
Restaurants.
Nonprofit organizations.
Elias introduced her to potential partners but didn't control the project.
Avery raised funding independently.
She hired instructors.
And she named the program The Open Door Initiative.

Because she remembered what it felt like to be trapped in a corridor with nowhere to go.
And she wanted other people to have options.
