Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT WARREN CROWE RETURNED

Warren Crowe resurfaced four weeks later.
Not in Chicago.
In a private residence outside Milwaukee.
Investigators traced communications connecting him to several associates involved in the gala attack.
The evidence was substantial.
But Crowe still had resources.
Influence.
And people willing to protect him.
Elias received a message through his attorney.
Crowe wanted to negotiate.
He offered information about the old fire in exchange for concessions involving certain business assets.
Elias stared at the proposal.
Gabriel stood beside him.
“What do you want to do?”
Elias looked toward the window.
For years, he'd solved problems through intimidation.
Now he thought about his father's letter.
Become someone they trust.
He looked at Gabriel.
“Forward it to the investigators.”
Gabriel blinked.
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
Avery learned about the decision that evening.
She smiled.
“You did the right thing.”
Elias looked at her.
“I'm trying.”
She took his hand.
“I know.”
He hesitated.
“Avery?”
“Yes?”
“When this is over, I don't know what my life will look like.”
She studied him.
He continued.
“My companies may be investigated. My reputation may collapse.”
Avery smiled faintly.
“Then you'll find out who you are without all of that.”
Elias looked down.
“And if you don't like what you find?”
She took a breath.
“Then change.”
He looked at her.
Avery continued.
“That's what the rest of us have to do.”
Elias laughed softly.
“You make everything sound simple.”
“No.”
She smiled.
“I make it sound possible.”
Three days later, Warren Crowe was arrested.
The investigation continued.
Rourke was also taken into custody after evidence connected him to the planned attack.

The criminal proceedings would take time.
But the immediate threat had finally begun to unravel.
