Chapter 11 - THE MAN BEHIND THE NAME

After the trial, Vincent changed.
Not overnight.
Not magically.
But deliberately.
He began separating his legitimate businesses from the criminal network he'd inherited.
It was complicated.
Dangerous.
Expensive.
He worked with attorneys and independent compliance advisers.
He relinquished control of operations he could not make lawful.
Some people called him weak.
Others called him foolish.
Vincent didn't care.
One evening, he invited Emily to dinner.
This time, there were candles.
Flowers.
A table overlooking the city.
Emily smiled.
“Is this a date?”
Vincent looked nervous.
“I hope so.”
She laughed.
“Good.”
They talked for hours.
About childhood.
About loss.
About the strange ways people survived things they believed would destroy them.
At the end of dinner, Vincent looked at her.
“Emily, I need to tell you something.”
She waited.
“I've fallen in love with you.”
Her heart stopped.
He continued.
“I know my life is complicated. I know my reputation isn't something you can ignore.”
Emily looked down.
He swallowed.
“But I want to build a life that doesn't require you to be afraid.”
She stared at him.
Then whispered:
“I love you too.”
Vincent closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like a man who had forgotten how to breathe.
Then he smiled.
“Really?”
Emily laughed through tears.
“Really.”
He reached across the table.
“May I kiss you?”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
And when he kissed her, it was gentle.
Careful.
Nothing like the ruthless man the city feared.
May you like
For the first time in years, Vincent felt something he'd almost forgotten.
Hope.
