Chapter 9 - THE LAST JONES

Five years after Adelaide left her family, Rockford was released from prison.
He was an older man now.
He lived quietly.
No mansion.
No private drivers.
No parties.
Just a small apartment and a part-time accounting job arranged through a former colleague.
Adelaide received one letter from him.
I don't expect forgiveness. I only want you to know that I finally understand what I destroyed.
She read it twice.
Then she visited him.
Rockford opened the door and stared at her.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
They sat at a small kitchen table.
There were no lawyers.
No Mateo.
No guards.
Just father and daughter.
“I used to think power meant never needing anyone,” Rockford said.
Adelaide smiled sadly.
“I used to think love meant accepting whatever people did to me.”
He looked at her.
“We were both wrong.”
“Yes.”
He took a breath.
“Are you happy?”
Adelaide thought about Mateo.
About the ocean house.
About her company.
About waking up beside a man who asked her opinion and listened to the answer.
“Yes.”
Rockford smiled.
“Then I did one thing right.”
Adelaide stood.
“You didn't.”
He looked confused.
“You didn't make me happy.”
She reached for the door.
“I did.”
She left him with those words.
Outside, Mateo was waiting beside the car.
He didn't ask what happened.
He simply opened the door for her.
Adelaide got in.
Then she looked back at the apartment.
She wasn't carrying anger anymore.
But she wasn't carrying guilt either.
The Jones name had once been the heaviest thing in her life.
May you like
Now it was simply a name.
