Chapter 5 - THE FIRST TIME SHE CHOSE HIM

The investigation lasted three months.
Mateo's attorneys traced the money.
Adelaide reconstructed every transaction.
And together they discovered something nobody had expected.
Rockford Jones had not acted alone.
Evelyn had orchestrated the transfers.
Chloe had created false invoices.
And Rockford had signed the final documents.
But there was one person who had quietly tried to stop them.
Adelaide's father.
Not enough to save her.
Not enough to confess.
But enough to leave a trail.
A hidden ledger was discovered inside the old family house.
It contained handwritten notes from Rockford.
One sentence appeared repeatedly:
Adelaide knows too much.
She read it twice.
Then she put the ledger down.
Mateo watched her carefully.
“You don't have to forgive him.”
“I don't.”
“You don't have to see him.”
“I know.”
“You don't owe your family anything.”
Adelaide looked at him.
“I know.”
Mateo nodded.
Then she surprised him.
“But I owe myself a future.”
He smiled faintly.
“Yes.”
That evening, they walked through the estate gardens.
Snow covered the stone paths.
Adelaide stopped beside a frozen fountain.
“Mateo?”
“Yes?”
“Why did you really choose me?”
He didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he said, “Because I saw you three years ago.”
She frowned.
“Where?”
“Outside Jones Financial.”
She remembered.
She had been carrying boxes after working late.
“You were standing in the rain,” Mateo continued. “Everyone else had gone home.”
“You were watching me?”
“I was waiting for your father.”
“And you saw me?”
“I saw you carrying six boxes while your father walked past you without helping.”
Adelaide looked away.
“You looked angry.”
“I was.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew you were smarter than everyone in that building.”
She smiled.
“And you thought that made me useful.”
“At first.”
“At first?”
Mateo stepped closer.
“Then I met you.”
Her smile faded.
He touched her hand.
“Now I think you're extraordinary.”
Adelaide's heart beat faster.
She could have kissed him.
Instead, she whispered, “I'm afraid.”
“So am I.”
That honesty was what finally made her close the distance.
Their first kiss was quiet.
No fireworks.
No dramatic declaration.
