Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT NATHAN'S DEATH

The breakthrough came from a retired fire investigator named Thomas Keene.

He had worked on the original terminal fire.

At the time, he questioned several inconsistencies.

The fire's origin.

The damaged security equipment.

The missing access logs.

But his concerns were dismissed.

Now, with new evidence available, Keene agreed to speak.

He met Detective Shaw and Elena at the police station.

Alessandro attended with counsel.

Keene opened an old folder.

“I never believed the electrical failure explanation was complete.”

Elena leaned forward.

“Why?”

Keene looked at her.

“Because the fire started in an area where the electrical system had recently been inspected.”

Elena's eyes filled.

“Nathan inspected it.”

Keene nodded.

“Yes.”

He continued.

“There were also signs that the security system had been disabled before the fire.”

Alessandro felt cold.

Victor had controlled the security systems.

Keene showed them photographs.

A damaged access panel.

A missing camera.

A door that appeared to have been secured from the outside.

Elena covered her mouth.

The new investigation concluded that the original accident finding was unreliable.

Evidence supported the possibility of deliberate interference with the building's safety and security systems.

Then Detective Shaw received a call.

A former employee had agreed to testify.

His name was Peter Voss.

He had worked under Victor.

And he claimed to know what happened the night Nathan died.

Voss described being ordered to disable certain cameras at the freight terminal.

He said Victor wanted access logs removed.

He also claimed Nathan was expected to arrive that night.

Elena sat motionless.

Shaw asked:

“Did Victor know Nathan would be inside?”

Voss lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Elena began crying.

For four years, she had imagined Nathan trapped in a terrible accident.

Now she understood someone may have deliberately created the conditions that killed him.

Alessandro stood.

He walked toward the window.

His hands were clenched.

For years, he had believed loyalty meant standing beside the same men.

Now he understood that loyalty without accountability could become complicity.

He turned toward Elena.

“I should have investigated.”

She looked at him through tears.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I can't change that.”

“No.”

“But I can help make sure the truth comes out.”

May you like

Elena wiped her face.

“Then do it.”
