Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH THAT COULD DESTROY THEM

The final truth came from Luca Romano.
He had been located and agreed to cooperate with investigators.
Luca admitted that Vincent had known about Ethan's involvement long before the restaurant.
He also revealed that Vincent had initially planned to approach me for information.
But the situation at L'Osteria had escalated unexpectedly.
Alby's men arrived earlier than anticipated.
Vincent panicked.
And he used me as cover.
The truth hurt.
But it also clarified something.
Vincent hadn't orchestrated every moment.
He had made a reckless decision under pressure.
And I had paid for it.
When I returned to Chicago, I asked to meet him.
He agreed immediately.
We met at a quiet café.
No security men at the table.
No elaborate arrangements.
Just coffee.
Vincent looked nervous.
I almost smiled.
“Hello,” he said.
“Hello.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then I asked:
“Why didn't you tell me everything?”
Vincent looked down.
“Because I was afraid you'd leave.”
I nodded.
“And I did.”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”
I studied him.
“Do you understand why?”
Vincent nodded.
“Because I took away your ability to choose.”
My eyes filled.
He continued.
“I treated your life like something I could use to solve my problems.”
I swallowed.
Vincent looked at me.
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then I said:
“Good.”
He smiled sadly.
I took a breath.
“But I'd like to know who you are when you're not lying.”
Vincent stared.
Then he smiled.
May you like
A small, genuine smile.
“I'd like that too.”
