Chapter 6 - THE WEDDING TRAP

The wedding remained on schedule.

Publicly.

Invitations.

Flowers.

Church.

Reception.

Genevieve wore her gown.

Marco arrived smiling.

Dr. Samuel Rusk attended as a “family physician.”

Everything exactly as planned.

Except the marriage license would never be filed.

The prenuptial packet contained marked evidence copies.

And the champagne intended for Alessandro had already been replaced.

Federal investigators monitored the reception through court-authorized surveillance tied to fraud and conspiracy evidence.

Alessandro hated outsiders in his business.

He hated murder attempts more.

Fatima did not attend the ceremony.

Her choice.

Amara stayed with a trusted childcare worker.

No children near the trap.

At the altar, Genevieve looked beautiful.

Alessandro almost mourned the life he had imagined.

Almost.

The officiant asked:

“Do you—”

A phone vibrated in Marco's pocket.

One message.

His face changed.

Tiny.

Matteo saw.

The ceremony continued.

At the reception, Dr. Rusk approached Alessandro with champagne.

“This one is yours.”

Alessandro smiled.

“Special?”

“Your mother’s vintage.”

His mother had been dead ten years.

Good emotional detail.

Bad lie.

Alessandro accepted the glass.

Did not drink.

Genevieve watched from across the room.

Marco watched harder.

Minutes later, Alessandro staggered.

Dropped the glass.

Collapsed.

Guests screamed.

Perfect.

Dr. Rusk rushed forward.

“He's seizing.”

He wasn't.

But Alessandro had learned stage combat from men less respectable than doctors.

Rusk administered an injection.

Or tried.

Matteo caught his wrist.

The room changed instantly.

Rusk froze.

Marco stepped backward.

Genevieve went white.

Alessandro opened his eyes.

Stood.

The silence was enormous.

Marco whispered:

“You…”

Alessandro adjusted his jacket.

“Disappointed?”

Investigators entered.

Not Rienzi gunmen.

Badges.

Warrants.

Marco's face finally broke.

Genevieve closed her eyes.

Dr. Rusk tried running.

He made it six steps.

Matteo brought him down without unnecessary force.

Marco looked at Alessandro.

“You brought police into your own wedding.”

“Yes.”

“Your father would be ashamed.”

That landed.

Then Alessandro smiled faintly.

“That's how I know it was probably the right decision.”

Marco laughed.

“You think you're legitimate now?”

“No.”

Honest.

“I think you're under arrest.”

Marco's eyes hardened.

“There are things in your company you don't want exposed.”

Alessandro nodded.

“I know.”

That answer frightened Marco.

Because blackmail requires secrecy.

Alessandro had already begun disclosing old financial operations through counsel.

Not everything overnight.

Enough to remove Marco's leverage.

Genevieve was cuffed last.

She looked at Alessandro.

“I did love you.”

He believed her.

That made it worse.

“I know.”

“Does that matter?”

“Yes.”

Hope.

Then:

“Not enough.”

She cried as officers led her away.

The reception hall emptied.

White flowers everywhere.

Untouched cake.

Chairs scattered.

Fatima arrived an hour later only after Matteo told her it was safe.

She found Alessandro alone near the dance floor.

“Congratulations.”

He looked at her.

“For?”

“Worst wedding I've ever seen.”

He laughed.

Tired.

“Amara?”

“Sleeping.”

“Good.”

Fatima looked at the altar decorations visible through the adjoining doors.

“You okay?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

He could have said fine.

He didn't.

She stepped closer.

Then stopped.

“Can I?”

He looked at her.

Understood.

“Yes.”

Fatima hugged him.

Alessandro closed his eyes.

May you like

For a man who controlled almost everything, receiving comfort without earning or ordering it felt strangely dangerous.

He let it happen.
