Chapter 4 - THE DEAD MAN’S INVOICES

Fatima remembered the storage box because Amara asked about her father.

“Daddy had blue papers.”

Fatima froze.

They were in the guesthouse kitchen.

Amara was coloring a sheep green.

“Blue papers?”

“Daddy box.”

Fatima stared.

Children remember details adults dismiss.

Daniel had kept one blue archive box above the hall closet.

After his death, Fatima moved everything into storage.

She had not opened it in more than a year.

Alessandro drove with her.

Not his men.

Him.

The storage unit smelled like dust and cardboard.

Fatima found the box.

Inside:

Tax returns.

Employment records.

Old birthday cards.

A broken calculator.

Then invoices.

Copies.

Northlake Terminal Services.

Equipment maintenance.

Container handling.

Emergency security surcharges.

Fatima frowned.

“These are what scared him?”

Alessandro took one.

Read.

Then another.

His expression changed.

“Maybe.”

“What?”

“These vendors don't exist.”

She stared.

“How can you know?”

“Because one of these addresses belonged to a Rienzi warehouse until six years ago.”

Another vendor routed payments through a company in Malta.

Another through Delaware.

Signatory approval:

M. Bellini.

Fatima sat down.

“Marco.”

“Yes.”

Then she found Daniel's notebook.

Not a diary.

Numbers.

He had written invoice totals beside actual terminal activity.

Differences.

$92,000.

$180,000.

$340,000.

Page after page.

Millions.

At the back:

ASKED M.B. ABOUT HARBOR SIX. HE SAID STOP COUNTING THINGS THAT DON'T BELONG TO ME.

Fatima's hands began shaking.

Alessandro read silently.

Another line.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, FATIMA DOESN'T KNOW. KEEP IT THAT WAY.

She cried.

Not loudly.

One hand over her mouth.

Daniel had protected her with ignorance.

She had hated him for secrecy after he died.

Now she understood why.

Alessandro moved closer.

Stopped.

“Can I?”

She looked at him.

That question surprised her.

Then nodded.

He sat beside her.

No embrace at first.

Just presence.

Eventually Fatima leaned into him.

Only slightly.

Enough.

After several minutes she whispered:

“Did Marco kill him?”

Alessandro could have said yes.

Wanted to.

Instead:

“I don't know.”

Truth.

“We'll find out.”

Fatima wiped her face.

“You keep saying we.”

“Does it bother you?”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because men like you say we until the dangerous part. Then suddenly everyone else becomes someone to protect.”

He almost smiled.

“You have strong opinions about men like me.”

“I have met enough men.”

Fair.

They copied everything and turned the originals over to investigators through an attorney.

The old invoices connected to Marco's shell companies.

More importantly, Daniel's calculations matched missing funds in Rienzi Maritime.

For seven years Marco had quietly diverted money.

Not enough to trigger panic.

Enough to create leverage.

Then Matteo found the reason.

A dormant agreement signed by Alessandro's father twelve years earlier.

If Rienzi Maritime defaulted on certain privately held obligations during a period when its principal voting holder was medically incapacitated, emergency sale rights could transfer three port concessions to a consortium.

The consortium had changed names repeatedly.

Current controlling member:

Bellini Strategic Holdings.

Alessandro stared.

“He's been waiting twelve years.”

“Yes.”

“Why marriage?”

“Because your existing trust structure prevents Marco from becoming proxy.”

“But spouse nomination can.”

“Under the substituted page.”

Everything aligned.

Genevieve marries Alessandro.

Drugged wedding night.

Temporary incapacity.

Genevieve names Marco proxy.

Marco triggers hidden obligation.

Port rights leave Rienzi control before Alessandro wakes.

By the time courts untangle it, ownership is dispersed.

Matteo said:

“That's the plan.”

Alessandro looked at Daniel's notebook.

“No.”

“What?”

“That's the business plan.”

Matteo frowned.

“Difference?”

“The real plan includes what happens to me after I wake up.”

They found that answer the next day.

Genevieve's hidden phone contained a deleted draft.

Recovered.

RUSK SAYS SECOND DOSE MAY APPEAR AS CARDIAC EVENT GIVEN FAMILY HISTORY. M. PREFERS NO RECOVERY.

No recovery.

Fatima read it.

Her face went pale.

“They're going to kill you.”

Alessandro looked at the screen.

“Yes.”

Then Fatima said:

“So we cancel the wedding.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

Her eyes widened.

“You have lost your mind.”

“Possibly.”

“You’re still marrying her?”

Alessandro’s expression became cold.

“No.”

May you like

Then:

“But Genevieve doesn't need to know that yet.”
