Chapter 1 - THE NAME HE BURIEDOnly three days after our wedding, I refused to carry a dinner plate to my sister-in-law while she sat absorbed in the television.

My husband immediately lost control.

He shouted at me and lashed out—and in that instant, the man I had just married became someone I barely recognized.

For several seconds, the kitchen went completely silent.

Ryan stood in front of me with one hand still raised.

His face was flushed, but his eyes were disturbingly calm, as though what he had done was not an accident but a punishment he believed I deserved.

“Look what you made me do,” he said.

My face still hurt.

The plate in my hands held grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans—the dinner I had spent more than an hour preparing after coming home from work.

Without hesitating, I shoved it across the counter.

It struck the tiled wall and shattered.

“I did not make you do anything,” I said.

“You made that choice.”

From the living room, Ryan’s twenty-four-year-old sister, Chloe, finally looked away from the television.

“Why are you turning dinner into such a huge problem?” she complained.

Ryan glanced toward her.

“Stay out of this.”

That was when I noticed something even more disturbing.

Chloe did not look shocked.

She seemed irritated by the argument, but she was not surprised by her brother’s behavior.

Ryan stepped closer and lowered his voice.

“Clean up the mess, make Chloe another plate, and stop embarrassing me.”

We were standing inside my townhouse in Columbus, Ohio—the home I had purchased four years before I ever met him.

Yet Ryan spoke to me as though I were an employee who had failed to complete an assigned task.

I slowly backed toward the hallway.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he demanded.

“To call the police.”

His expression changed immediately.

Ryan reached for my phone on the counter, but Chloe moved first.

She grabbed it and held it behind her back.

“Chloe,” Ryan warned.

She stared at him for several long seconds.

Then she turned toward me.

“Go upstairs and lock the bedroom door,” she said quietly.

“I’ll make the call.”

Ryan seized her wrist.

Chloe cried out, and I rushed forward, forcing him to let go.

He stumbled against the refrigerator, recovered, and quickly blocked the hallway.

“You’re my wife!” he shouted.

“You don’t call the police over one incident!”

Before I could answer, heavy pounding shook the front door.

“Columbus Police! Open the door!”

Ryan froze.

Chloe was still holding the phone in one hand.

The glowing screen revealed that she had already contacted emergency services.

Ryan slowly turned toward his sister.

Her hands were trembling, but her voice remained clear.

“I should have warned Emma before the wedding,” Chloe whispered.

“You did the same thing to Melissa.”

My breath caught.

Melissa was Ryan’s former fiancée—the woman he had told me had died in a car accident six years earlier.

And suddenly, I realized that the story he had told me about her might have been a lie.
