Chapter 8 - THE SECRET BEHIND VANESSA'S PREGNANCY

The first rule Rebecca gave me was simple.

"Don't assume Vanessa's pregnancy is fraudulent."

I stared at her.

"I wasn't going to."

"Good. Her medical information is private. Whatever Vincent did financially doesn't give us the right to investigate her body."

I nodded.

She was right.

As a physician, I understood the importance of medical privacy.

My anger did not change that.

What we could investigate were the financial transactions Vincent had made using marital funds.

And those transactions were extraordinary.

---

Thomas Bell obtained legally available corporate records showing that Moretti Development Group had funded Northbridge Family Services through a consulting arrangement.

The contracts described employee wellness, recruitment support, and family-building benefits.

But the invoices contained inconsistencies.

Several payments had no matching services.

Others appeared to be related to private arrangements for Vincent.

One invoice included a reference to a fertility services account opened under initials that matched Vincent's.

Rebecca showed me the document.

"Does this prove anything about Vanessa's pregnancy?" I asked.

"No. It doesn't establish who received medical treatment or what kind. We won't speculate about that."

"Then what does it prove?"

"That Vincent may have used company or marital money for expenses he concealed."

I stared at the paper.

"What does Margaret have to do with it?"

"She approved some of the payments."

I closed my eyes.

Vincent and his mother.

For years, I had believed their relationship was simply close.

Now I was discovering that they had built a private world in which I existed only when convenient.

---

Two days later, Vanessa requested a meeting through her attorney.

I almost refused.

But Rebecca explained that Vanessa wanted to withdraw the hospital complaint and discuss the anonymous messages.

We met at a mediator's office.

Vanessa looked different.

No expensive fur coat.

No dramatic makeup.

She wore a simple gray sweater.

Her face was pale.

"Claire," she began, "I owe you an apology."

I remained silent.

She twisted her hands.

"The complaint against you was wrong."

"Why did you file it?"

"Vincent told me you were angry enough to risk my treatment."

I stared at her.

"And you believed him?"

"I was frightened. I was bleeding. I didn't understand what was happening."

I took a breath.

"Then why didn't you ask the hospital to explain the timeline?"

"Because Margaret said the complaint would protect me."

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Did Margaret tell you what to write?"

Vanessa nodded.

"She helped draft it."

I felt sick.

"Did she alter my medical notes?"

Vanessa looked startled.

"What?"

Rebecca explained the false chart entry without revealing confidential investigative details.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"I didn't know."

I watched her carefully.

She appeared genuinely shocked.

But I had learned not to confuse emotion with evidence.

"What about your marriage to Vincent?" I asked.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"He said the legal paperwork was being handled."

"Did you know we were still married?"

She nodded.

"He told me you'd agreed to an uncontested divorce."

"I hadn't."

"I know that now."

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered, "I thought if I gave him a child, he'd finally choose me."

The sentence was so painful that my anger briefly gave way to pity.

She continued.

"He kept telling me you were going to leave. That you were only staying because of his money."

I almost laughed.

My salary had supported much of our household spending during Vincent's business downturns.

But she didn't know that.

She knew only the story he had told her.

"Vanessa," I said quietly, "I don't want Vincent back."

She looked up.

"I don't want to compete with you. I don't want your child to suffer. And I don't want either of us to spend the rest of our lives fighting over a man who lied to both of us."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"What do I do?"

I looked at her.

"Start by telling the truth."

---

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

She removed a folder.

Inside were copies of financial documents Margaret had given her.

Some concerned Northbridge.

Others concerned a private trust.

Vanessa pointed to one page.

"Margaret said Vincent was setting this up for our baby."

I read the heading.

Moretti Family Continuity Trust.

The trust included provisions related to future descendants and control of family company shares.

But one paragraph caught my attention.

It referred to a medical certification requirement tied to the birth of an eligible heir.

I frowned.

"Why would a family trust require a medical certificate beyond ordinary proof of parentage?"

Rebecca examined the page.

Her expression changed.

"Claire, this document appears to be part of an attempt to control succession rights inside the company."

Vanessa looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Rebecca answered carefully.

"It may mean Margaret's interest in the pregnancy wasn't just personal."

I stared at the trust.

Then at Vanessa.

For the first time, I understood something important.

Neither of us had simply been caught in Vincent's romantic dishonesty.

We had been placed inside a family business struggle neither of us fully understood.

And Margaret Moretti had been directing far more of it than we realized.
