Chapter 12 - THE EVIDENCE VINCENT TRIED TO DESTROY

In May, Vincent's attorney requested an urgent meeting.

Rebecca called me.

"Claire, there's been a development."

I was sitting in the hospital cafeteria.

"What kind?"

"The financial investigation has uncovered additional documents."

"About Northbridge?"

"Yes. Vincent attempted to delete certain business files after learning about the audit."

I closed my eyes.

"Of course he did."

"The company's backup system preserved them."

"What do they show?"

"Undisclosed payments, false descriptions of expenses, and correspondence suggesting he knew company funds were being used improperly."

I stared at my untouched lunch.

"Is he facing charges?"

"That depends on the investigating authorities. We should avoid assumptions until the facts are established."

I nodded.

"What does this mean for the divorce?"

"It strengthens our ability to trace disputed funds."

---

That afternoon, Rebecca showed me an email Vincent had sent to Margaret.

The subject line read:

Family Arrangements.

I read it twice.

Vincent had written that he wanted to preserve his marriage to me while maintaining his relationship with Vanessa until "the family situation was resolved."

I stared at the words.

Preserve his marriage.

Maintain his relationship.

As though we were two investment properties.

As though my life could be placed on hold while he decided which arrangement was more profitable.

Another email was worse.

Margaret had suggested that Vincent delay telling me about Vanessa's pregnancy because "Claire is emotionally fragile after what happened last March."

I felt physically sick.

They had used my grief as a reason to conceal the truth.

I placed the paper down.

Rebecca watched me.

"Claire?"

"I'm okay."

"Are you sure?"

I looked at her.

"Do you know what I used to think?"

"What?"

"That if Vincent understood how much he hurt me, he'd stop."

My voice remained steady.

"Now I realize he understood enough to hide it."

Rebecca reached across the table.

I took her hand.

---

A week later, Vincent requested to speak directly with me.

I agreed to a short meeting at Rebecca's office.

He arrived without flowers.

Without gifts.

Without his wedding ring.

He looked exhausted.

"I know you've seen the emails," he said.

"Yes."

He lowered his head.

"I don't have an excuse."

"Good."

He swallowed.

"I convinced myself I could fix everything before you found out."

I looked at him.

"Fix what?"

"My marriage. My relationship with Vanessa. The company."

"You wanted to keep every benefit without accepting any consequences."

He nodded.

"Yes."

For several seconds, I said nothing.

Then Vincent looked toward my stomach.

"How's the baby?"

"Healthy."

He closed his eyes.

"Thank God."

I watched him carefully.

"Vincent, being a father isn't something you can perform when it's convenient."

"I know."

"Your children won't need expensive houses or family trusts as much as they'll need honesty and consistency."

He nodded.

"I've started counseling."

"Good."

"I'm also cooperating with the audit."

"Good."

He looked at me.

"Is there any chance you'll forgive me?"

I took a breath.

"Maybe someday."

His eyes filled with hope.

"But forgiveness doesn't mean reconciliation."

The hope disappeared.

I continued.

"I'm not coming back."

He looked away.

"I know."

For the first time, I believed he might actually understand.

---

Before leaving, Vincent placed an envelope on the table.

Inside were copies of financial statements and a letter acknowledging his misuse of marital funds.

Rebecca examined them carefully.

"This will need independent verification," she said.

"I understand," Vincent replied.

Then he looked at me.

"I wanted you to have it voluntarily."

I studied him.

It wasn't enough to repair the damage.

Nothing was.

But it was the first time he had given me evidence instead of excuses.

When he left, Rebecca leaned back in her chair.

"How do you feel?"

I thought for a moment.

"Sad."

She nodded.

"Anything else?"

I looked toward the window.

"Ready."

"Ready for what?"

I smiled faintly.

May you like

"Whatever comes next."
