Chapter 13 - THE NURSE WHO WALKED INTO THE FIRE

Noah was sitting beside a window when Emma entered his hospital room.

For one impossible second, she couldn't move.

He looked older.

His dark hair had gone gray at the temples.

There were lines around his eyes she didn't remember.

But when he turned, his smile was the same.

Crooked.

A little mischievous.

The smile of the boy who used to steal the last pancake and blame the dog.

"Em?"

Her knees weakened.

"Noah?"

He stood slowly.

For a moment, they stared at each other.

Then Emma crossed the room.

She wrapped her arms around him.

And the seven years between them disappeared.

She cried so hard she couldn't speak.

Noah held her tightly.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

She shook her head against his shoulder.

"No."

"I tried to come home."

"I know."

"They wouldn't let me."

"I know."

His voice broke.

"I thought you might think I abandoned you."

Emma pulled back.

She looked into his face.

"Never."

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

"I thought about you every day."

She began crying again.

"So did I."

For a long time, they stood holding each other.

There were questions.

Thousands of questions.

But they could wait.

For the first time in seven years, her brother was alive and standing in front of her.

That was enough.

Over the next several weeks, Noah began recovering.

His health required ongoing assessment.

He needed support adjusting to ordinary life.

There were administrative records to correct, legal proceedings to navigate, and memories he struggled to discuss.

Emma learned quickly that reunion didn't erase trauma.

Some nights Noah woke from nightmares.

Some days he couldn't bear crowded spaces.

Sometimes a particular sound reminded him of Saint Catherine's, and he stopped speaking.

Emma wanted to fix everything.

Then remembered what Dr. Chen had told her years earlier.

You can care for someone without taking responsibility for every part of their suffering.

She helped Noah find independent medical and psychological support.

She listened.

And she allowed him to decide what he wanted to share.

Meanwhile, the hospital investigation cleared Emma of wrongdoing.

The audit established that her credentials had been misused.

The complaint concerning patient confidentiality was not substantiated.

She was invited to return to the emergency department.

Dr. Chen met her at the entrance.

"Welcome back, Richardson."

Emma smiled.

"Miss me?"

"Terribly. Nobody else argues with me about staffing."

She laughed.

Then stepped through the automatic doors.

The place smelled like disinfectant and coffee.

A child cried somewhere near triage.

A monitor beeped.

A nurse hurried past carrying supplies.

For the first time in weeks, Emma felt the familiar rhythm of work settle around her.

She was home.

Three days later, a fire broke out at an old warehouse used by a former Aster contractor.

Emma was on duty when the first ambulances arrived.

The emergency department became chaotic.

Several workers had inhaled smoke.

Two had burns.

One was critically injured.

Emma moved between patients, doing the work she'd trained to do.

Then she recognized a face.

Mara Sloane.

The former nurse who had helped investigators locate Noah.

She lay on a gurney coughing.

Emma approached.

"Mara?"

The woman opened her eyes.

"Emma."

"What happened?"

Mara struggled to speak.

"They were destroying the records."

Emma stopped.

"What records?"

"Saint Catherine's. The original contracts."

Emma looked toward Dr. Chen.

He immediately contacted the appropriate authorities.

Mara grabbed Emma's sleeve.

"Victoria was there."

Emma felt cold.

"Victoria Vescari?"

Mara nodded.

"She tried to take the files."

Then her eyes filled with terror.

"And Sebastian locked the storage doors."

The fire investigation would later establish that someone had deliberately set the warehouse ablaze while records were being removed.

Several employees escaped after firefighters forced access to the building.

Victoria was located and taken into custody nearby.

Sebastian was arrested following additional evidence connecting him to the operation.

The blaze destroyed part of the structure.

But the primary records had already been copied and preserved.

The attempt to eliminate the evidence failed.

That evening, Julian came to the hospital.

He stood at the end of the corridor, looking exhausted.

Emma approached.

"Is it true?"

He nodded.

"Sebastian's in custody."

"And Victoria?"

"Also."

Emma exhaled.

Julian looked toward the trauma rooms.

"Was anyone killed?"

"No. Several people were injured, but the emergency teams got them out."

Relief crossed his face.

Then he looked at Emma.

"I heard you were treating the workers."

"It's my job."

He smiled faintly.

"Of course it is."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Julian said quietly, "I don't know what my life looks like after this."

Emma studied him.

"You'll have to find out."

He nodded.

"I know."

She took a breath.

"Julian?"

"Yes?"

"If you want a different life, you have to build it. You can't wait for everybody else to forgive you first."

His eyes filled.

"I know."

Emma reached for his hand.

May you like

This time, she didn't feel like she was trying to rescue him.

She was simply offering to walk beside him while he learned what came next.
