Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO SOLD HIS OWN FAMILY

Julian's younger brother was named Sebastian Vescari.

He was thirty-one.

Charming.

Well educated.

And, according to the financial records, deeply involved in the companies that operated Aster Medical Logistics.

Julian had spent years protecting him.

Paying debts.

Covering business mistakes.

Making excuses whenever Sebastian disappointed him.

Their mother died when Sebastian was twenty.

Their father had always considered him unreliable.

Julian believed it was his responsibility to keep the family together.

Now he was discovering that the brother he'd protected had helped conceal another family's son.

Emma stepped away from Julian.

"Your brother?"

He nodded.

"His signature appears on the authorization."

"And you knew?"

"No. I received the records this afternoon."

She stared.

"Why didn't you tell me immediately?"

He looked ashamed.

"Because I wanted to be certain."

Emma shook her head.

"Julian."

"I know."

"You promised me honesty."

His expression tightened.

"I did."

"Then you don't get to decide which parts of the truth I'm ready to hear."

He lowered his eyes.

"You're right."

Emma took a breath.

She wanted to believe him.

But the pattern frightened her.

Powerful men protecting their families.

Complicated truths hidden behind closed doors.

People like Noah paying the price.

"I need some space," she whispered.

Julian nodded.

"I understand."

The following morning, Sebastian's involvement became clearer.

Records showed that he had managed several of Aster's financial accounts.

He also approved payments to Saint Catherine's during the years Noah was held there under an alias.

Investigators were examining whether those approvals were part of an agreement to conceal Noah's identity.

Sebastian denied wrongdoing.

He claimed he merely signed documents prepared by Victoria.

But an internal email contradicted him.

It referred directly to "the Richardson problem."

Another message discussed ensuring that "Daniel Reed" could not contact his sister.

Emma read the evidence with her attorney.

Her hands shook.

They knew her name.

They knew Noah wanted to contact her.

And they deliberately prevented it.

When Julian confronted Sebastian, he did so in the presence of counsel.

Sebastian arrived smiling.

"Julian, this has gotten ridiculous."

Julian didn't smile back.

"Explain the transfers."

Sebastian shrugged.

"Victoria handled the medical side."

"And you handled the payments."

"I signed what the lawyers approved."

Julian placed the relevant documents on the table.

"These messages refer to Noah Richardson."

Sebastian's smile disappeared.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he laughed nervously.

"That kid was a problem."

Julian stared.

"What?"

"He was going to expose everything. We were trying to contain a corporate disaster."

"A corporate disaster?"

Sebastian looked annoyed.

"Julian, don't pretend you don't understand how these things work."

Julian's face went cold.

"No."

He stood.

"I understand exactly how you think they work."

Sebastian leaned forward.

"You can't turn your back on family."

For a moment, Julian said nothing.

Then he answered quietly.

"Family isn't permission to destroy someone else's life."

Sebastian left the meeting under legal supervision.

His statements and documents became part of the investigation.

Julian provided additional financial records to authorities.

He authorized an independent examination of every company connected to Aster and Saint Catherine's.

Some executives resigned.

Others were suspended.

Several contracts were terminated.

And Julian stepped away from direct management of the relevant businesses while the investigation continued.

The choices cost him money.

Influence.

And the loyalty of men who had admired him only because he could make problems disappear.

Emma learned about the decisions from Dr. Chen.

"He testified," Chen said.

"Julian?"

"Yes. Through his attorney and investigators. He provided records that implicated his own brother."

Emma looked down.

"Good."

Chen studied her.

"You care about him."

She swallowed.

"Yes."

"Does that frighten you?"

She laughed bitterly.

"He's Julian Vescari."

Chen smiled faintly.

"That wasn't my question."

Emma looked toward the hospital entrance.

The place where Julian had arrived bleeding.

The place where their lives became entangled.

"Yes," she whispered.

"It frightens me because I know he can be kind."

She paused.

"And I'm still learning whether kindness is enough when someone has done so much harm."

Chen nodded.

"That's a question you don't have to answer quickly."

That evening, Emma received the call she'd waited seven years to hear.

"Miss Richardson?"

A hospital social worker.

"Your brother is ready to see you."

Emma stopped breathing.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"I'm coming."
