Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY THAT CHOSE EACH OTHER

A year passed.

The Moretti estate changed.

The west wing was no longer forbidden.

Alessandro transformed part of it into an accessible family living area with wide doorways, comfortable furniture, and a playroom for Emma.

The household staff no longer whispered whenever he entered.

He attended medical appointments regularly.

He traveled.

He worked.

He laughed.

And he continued restructuring his legitimate businesses while addressing the legal consequences of his former criminal activities.

The investigations involving Marco moved through the courts.

The family empire no longer looked the way it once had.

But Alessandro didn't seem to miss the old version.

One evening, Emma climbed onto the sofa beside him.

She was four now.

Very serious.

Very opinionated.

And still convinced she was responsible for everyone's happiness.

"Alessandro?"

He looked up.

"Yes, princess?"

"Are you still sad?"

He considered the question.

"Sometimes."

Emma nodded.

"Me too."

He smiled.

"What makes you sad?"

"When Mommy says no more cookies."

He laughed.

"That's tragic."

Emma giggled.

Then grew serious.

"But you're happy more now."

Alessandro's expression softened.

"Yes."

She touched his hand.

"Because Mommy loves you."

He looked toward me.

I stood in the doorway, watching.

"Yes," he whispered.

Emma smiled.

"And I love you too."

His eyes filled.

He reached for her.

She climbed into his lap.

For several minutes, he simply held her.

Then she whispered:

"Can I call you Daddy?"

The room went silent.

Alessandro looked at me.

I felt tears rise.

Emma's biological father had never maintained a relationship with her.

Alessandro had become the man who attended preschool events, read bedtime stories, and remembered which stuffed animals needed repairing.

I nodded gently.

"If that's what you want, sweetheart."

Emma looked back at him.

"Daddy?"

Alessandro closed his eyes.

A tear slipped down his cheek.

Then he smiled.

"Yes, princess."

May you like

Emma hugged him.

And the man Chicago once feared began crying in the middle of his own living room.
