Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LIVE AGAIN

Alessandro began rehabilitation with renewed determination.

Not because anyone promised he would walk.

Because he wanted a fuller life.

He worked with therapists to improve strength, transfers, wheelchair skills, and daily independence.

He received updated mobility equipment.

His pain-management plan was reviewed.

He began leaving the estate more often.

Sometimes for appointments.

Sometimes for business.

And sometimes simply because he wanted to see the city.

One afternoon, he asked if Emma and I would join him at the aquarium.

I hesitated.

"Are you sure?"

He smiled.

"Does Emma like fish?"

"She loves them."

"Then I'm sure."

We spent three hours watching jellyfish, sharks, and sea turtles.

Emma pressed her face against the glass.

"Look!"

Alessandro rolled beside her.

"I see."

"Big fish!"

"Very big."

She turned toward him.

"Can you swim?"

He smiled.

"Not like I used to."

Emma considered that.

Then nodded.

"That's okay. Fish do enough swimming."

I laughed.

Alessandro laughed too.

Later, we sat near the waterfront.

Emma fell asleep in her stroller.

The lake glittered beneath the afternoon sun.

Alessandro looked at me.

"Claire."

"Yes?"

"Do you ever regret coming to the estate?"

I thought about everything.

The fear.

The threats.

The investigation.

The strange friendship that had grown between us.

Then I shook my head.

"No."

He studied me.

"Even after everything?"

I smiled.

"Especially after everything."

He looked away.

Then whispered:

"I don't know what I'd have done without you."

I shook my head.

"You would have found a way."

He looked at me.

"Maybe."

Then his expression softened.

"But I'm glad I didn't have to."

May you like

My heart fluttered.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the affection growing between us had become something neither of us was ready to name.
