Chapter 8 - THE HEARING

Two weeks after Serena entered the Rinaldi mansion with thirty-six dollars in her bank account, she walked into family court wearing a borrowed navy dress.
Victor offered to buy her something.
She refused.
âI want to walk in as myself.â
âYou're stubborn.â
âYou noticed.â
Lucia waited with a court-appointed child advocate.
Adrian sat across the courtroom.
He looked confident.
Judge Keene was gone.
Suspended pending federal investigation.
A replacement judge, Honorable Rebecca Lang, presided.
Adrian's attorney began aggressively.
âMs. Valente knowingly moved her daughter into the residence of Victor Rinaldi, a man repeatedly associated with organized crime.â
Serena's attorney stood.
âNo criminal conviction exists against Mr. Rinaldi.â
Adrian smiled.
The attorney continued.
âMs. Valente is financially unstable.â
That hurt because it was true.
âShe has changed residences twice.â
True.
âShe recently lost utilities.â
True.
âShe has accepted employment requiring irregular hours.â
True.
Then Serena testified.
âYes, I was broke.â
The courtroom quieted.
âYes, my power bill was overdue.â
She looked directly at Adrian.
âAnd yes, I accepted a job because I would clean floors, cook meals, work nights, and swallow my pride before I let my daughter believe abandoning responsibility is easier than meeting it.â
Adrian's smile disappeared.
Then Victor testified.
The courtroom reacted when his name was called.
He took the oath.
Adrian's lawyer attacked him immediately.
âMr. Rinaldi, would you describe your lifestyle as safe?â
âNo.â
Serena looked at him.
He continued.
âNot historically.â
âWould you consider yourself an appropriate influence on children?â
Victor looked toward his sons waiting outside.
âI am trying to become one.â
The honesty changed the room.
Then Mr. Salvatore introduced evidence.
Financial records.
Recorded calls.
The premature custody petition.
Payments to Judge Keene's family company.
Adrian's face changed.
His attorney whispered urgently.
Then the largest revelation came.
The recording from Isabella's files.
Adrian's voice:
Once Serena loses custody, she'll give us whatever Antonio left.
Serena closed her eyes.
There it was.
Not suspicion.
Not interpretation.
Truth.
Adrian stood.
âThis is illegal!â
The judge ordered him seated.
Another recording played.
Carlo:
And the girl?
Adrian:
Lucia is leverage. Nothing more.
Serena heard a sound behind her.
Lucia.
She had entered with her advocate.
She heard it.
Her father's voice calling her leverage.
Serena wanted to destroy Adrian.
Instead, she ran to her daughter.
Lucia buried her face against her.
âMom.â
âI've got you.â
âDid Daddy say that?â
Serena could not lie.
âYes.â
Lucia cried.
Victor looked at Adrian.
For one terrifying second, everyone saw the man New York feared.
Then Victor looked at his sons.
And remembered Isabella.
He remained seated.
That was his victory.
Federal investigators entered minutes later.
Adrian was arrested on conspiracy, fraud, witness intimidation, and evidence-tampering allegations.
His custody petition was dismissed.
Serena retained sole custody.
When the judge announced it, Serena did not cheer.
She simply held Lucia and cried.
Outside, reporters waited.
Victor could have walked through another exit.
Instead, he stood beside Serena.
A journalist shouted:
âMr. Rinaldi, is Ms. Valente your employee?â
Victor looked at Serena.
âYes.â
âNothing more?â
Serena raised an eyebrow.
Victor almost smiled.
âShe is the woman who taught my sons to eat dinner.â
The reporters laughed.
Serena did too.
That night, the children demanded pancakes.
âFor dinner again?â Victor asked.
âTradition,â Matteo said.
They sat together.
Six chairs.
Victor.
Four boys.
Lucia.
Serena stood at the counter.
Nico pointed.
âYou need a chair.â
Serena smiled.
âIâm serving.â
âNo,â he said.
âYou're family dinner.â
The room went silent.
Victor looked at Serena.
She slowly sat.
Nobody mentioned the word family again.
They didn't need to.
But their victory lasted less than twenty-four hours.
The next afternoon, Dominic received a call from the hospital.
Carlo Bianchi had been found.
Alive.
And willing to testify.
There was only one problem.
Before federal agents could reach him, Carlo asked to speak privately with Victor.
He had one final secret.
âThe person who ordered Isabella's death,â Carlo whispered, âwasn't Adrian.â
Victor stared.
âWho?â
Carlo smiled weakly.
May you like
âSomeone still inside your house.â
